I am pleased to start revealing the finalists for the 2008 Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Scenario Contest. We received a lot of entries, and the three finalists should be extremely proud to rise to the top of the number of excellent entries received. I’d like to thank everyone who did participate in the contest - I enjoyed reading the wide variety of scenarios and ideas, especially to see how creative and thematic the entries could be given the tight deadline and submission guidelines.
Scenario Contest Finalist #1:
Grauschloss
By Daniel Niklas Jørgensen
Daniel Niklas Jørgensen’s submission indicates that the scenario was inspired by the literary works of Mervyn Peake, H.P. Lovecraft and Marquis de Sade – an intriguing combination of sources.
Here’s the scenario overview Daniel provides for his entry:
Grauschloss is a bleak, gothic scenario of investigation and intrigue, ideally run as a stand-alone adventure with four players. In it the players assume the roles of an inquisitorial assembly heeding a call for help by the priest Pieter Schött, who rightly senses that something is terribly, terribly wrong at the keep and in the nearby village of Almburg. Their task is to investigate the murders that have occurred there, discern truth from lies, and hopefully uncover the dark truth of Grauschloss’s history. The central idea behind the scenario is not puzzle-solving, however, but realising a sense of gothic horror that should leave the players squirming in their seats, all the while pushing them to roleplay their characters to the fullest.
What impressed the judges about Grauschloss was the way Daniel addressed the player characters. To create a wholly self-contained experience, Grauschloss includes four very specifically designed player characters. Each pre-generated character has his own personal background, and describes the events leading up to that character’s involvement in the scenario. Each description also provides that character’s feelings and attitude toward the other pre-generated characters, which really helps create some dynamic and interesting roleplaying situations.
The environment, story elements and cast of characters are kept clean and simple, creating a setting in which the story can unfold in a variety of ways depending on how the characters interact with the NPCs - and each other. Coupled with the pre-generated characters, Grauschloss could be easily used as a one-shot introduction to WFRP, or run at conventions.
Congratulations, Daniel Niklas Jørgensen – as one of the finalists, you may be selected as the ultimate winner of the 2008 Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Scenario Contest!
