Rule clarification appreciated regarding targ duplicate and valar morghulis

By SerArthurDayne, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hello,

Was playing a friend in some joust games when this issue came up.

He would have the bigger dragons out like Drogon and Viscerion etc, then would play black hatchling or its like card as a attachment to drogon. Then next phase he would valar morghulis and remove the black hatchling duplicate from drogon and keep drogon in play.

Is that possible to do ? I thought you would have to discard dorgon and then the duplicate of black hatchling would now be in play? Not sure though. One more thing on this, duplicates stay in play after Valar Morghulis right ? Or does Valar wipe the original plus the duplicate ?

Also with the hatchling cards, you can not play them as duplicate from your hand directly to the dragons right? you have to bring them out of shadows before you can do this ?

Once the hatchling has become a duplicate, it acts like any other duplicate and gives the dragon the response to save it by discarding the duplicate.

And you can in fact discard a duplicate to 'save' a character during a Valar Morghulis.

You seem to be doing duplicates incorrectly in general. When a character has a duplicate on it, the rules say you discard the duplicate in order to save the original. You do not discard the original, leaving the duplicate "behind" it as the new legal character. So when you use a duplicate to save a character from Valar (or anything else), it is the duplicate card that leaves play, not the character card. Note that if it was the original that left play, it would take all of its power and attachments with it, which isn't much of a "save." So it should make sense that the duplicate is saving the original, not acting as the "remains" of a character that is killed.

Essentially, yes. What it comes down to is that the text on the Hatchlings only works when the Hatchling is in play. It does not work from your hand. So you have to get the Hatchling into play first - which usually means it must go through Shadows. If you have some other "put a character into play" effect, though, you might be able to get it into play without going through Shadows, but having to go through Shadows is far more common.
