Insignium Question

By Dok Martin, in Dark Heresy

Hey guys. Um, this is a bit embarassing.

I keep stumbling upon this insignium I'm not familiar with. It's basically a winged skull, so I guess it's military. But it's got "RC7P" written underneath, which doesn't tell me anything. Google's not much help either. You can find it on page 204 of the Radical's.

Anybody?

Probably another symbol of the inquisition

Wing skulls tend to be Space Marine symbols, don't they? In the game "Space Marine" the character (who is an Ultramarine) has a winged skull symbol on his chest. Another image I dug up in the Lexicanum, of a Blood Angel also has a winged skull on his chest. In fact, as I go through the space marine articles in the Lexicanum I see this appear on pretty much every set of Space Marine power armor - so I'm going to say that is your answer.

As for the numbers, I'm guessing they refer to Unit and such.

Winged skull insignia are also often seen on Imperial Guard Commissars.

Its mentioned in either the Departmento Munitorum book or the Imperial Guardsmans Uplifting Primer. Its a medal in whichever book it is for heroism that many Imperial Guard Sergeants and Officers end up getting awarded. It does mention that many space marine sergeants also bear this on their armour too but doesn't go into what exactly it means in relation to them. I can't remember where I put the book at the moment though but I'll keep my eyes peeled, I think it was the departmento munitorum book... which makes sense if a lot of commisars have it since they work for the departmento munitorum. It's definitely a medal awarded in the Imperial Guard but beyond that organisation its greater meaning

However in the real world the skull with wings is used in a lot of places on grave stones and by bikers for example.

To be more precise: it's definitely attached to the military branch of the Imperium in one way or another. And there are winged skulls in abundance , no doubt.

It is the " RC7P " written underneath that puzzles me. Seems to be some kind of stamp?

It's probably got no specific relevance - I guess ist was simply a case of it looked cool to teh graphic designer...

In the setting though perhaps it's just one of those things - it was recorded on a badge a millenia ago and tradition upholds that for this specific award that is the sacred text that is attached - it's meaning and significance lost forever but it's existence an intrinsic and inseperrable part of the insignia.

There's lots of examples of people and organisations in the Imperium going through the motions without understanding why they do what they do... I think it sort of fits.

From Lexicanum in "Imperial Guard Honors":

Winged Skull

"The Winged Skull is earned by those who have demonstrated inspirational leadership which led to victory. It is often displayed on the shoulder guards of armour. The medal itself of ancient origin and its design of a skull with an iron device has been adopted by the Space Marines as an insignia for a Sergeant."

Of course, that's just the decorative metal. The actual winged skull insignia is interchangeable with the aquila as a symbol of the Imperium of Mankind. Where the aquila denotes unity between the Imperium and Mechanicus with the double-head the Winged Skull is a more direct indication of the IMPERIUM (wings) of MANKIND (skull). The designation below is probably an identifier of the Conclave and sub-sector of the region said inquisitor is charged with overseeing. As Latin tends to also get used a lot with official titles I venture the RL are "Regio Calixia" as per the regional conclave.
