Colours of Dice and 'Missing' (The power of Newb)

By Chromatism, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hey everyone.

I just bought Descent today, and I have to say... the contents are both awesome and a little mindblowing! My first 'Dungeon Crawler' game of this ilk.

But unfortunately (and I am chalking this up to being half asleep) I need to ask an apparently daft question, but something over which I need a little clarification. I'm aware that the Rule Book states that *Any* miss turned up on the attack dice indicates that the attack fails to hit. However, just to use an example on page 21 there's a relic named the 'Blade of Light' which utilizes one Red attack die, two Green and two Yellow.

Now, are we playing off the idea that the more powerful the weapon, the more combat dice you can roll but the greater the chance of missing? Or, if I were to roll a miss on the Green dice, would I then ignore the Green dice only and still take in to the account the Red and Yellow?

Forgive me if this has been answered. I have trawled through the errata and several FAQs, and this isn't touched on so I'm assuming that the manual is still quite correct. If someone could reply to save my own brand of logic from creeping up and taking over, that would be great!

Many thanks - Chrome

There are three types of attack in Descent; Melee , which uses a red die; Ranged , which uses a blue die; and Magic, which uses a white die. Of these dice, the red, blue, and white, there is one face which has an 'X' on it. If this X is rolled on an attack, it misses. The green die modifies how much damage an attack does and the yellow die increases the range of your non-melee attacks. These dice, the green and the yellow, do not have X's on them and cannot make an attack miss. Introduced in the Tomb of Ice, we now have the Stealth die. It has X's on two of its faces and is added to your roll if a creature you are attacking has the Stealth ability. Rolling an X on this die will also cause your attack to miss. As an aside, if you do not have enough range to reach a target with a Ranged or Magic attack, you will still miss, even if you didn't roll an X on the main (red, blue, or white) attack die.

A blank on a dice is not the same as a miss.

Now, it could be that you are one of the unlucky people to get a freakish dice with your set, with lots of wierd symbols on it.

Check on the Descent online dice roller, to make sure you have the right dice. There should only be an X (a miss) on the white, blue and red.

Ahah! Cheers.

Ya, I am going to chalk this up to stupidity and sleeplesness ;) When I finally took a proper look at my dice (and stopped hallucinating...) then yes! I see where I went wrong. Many thanks for the help, I just made a late night delerious assumption that turned out to be totally incorrect.

Thanks again for your time.

I hope you stick around on these boards here then happy.gif - personally, I think those people making delirious assumptions at times are the best to talk with.

Where did you hide that purple elephant now? It was right there, just a moment ago!
