Purchase Cards v. Adventure Cards

By branles, in Talisman Rules Questions

Let's say, for example, I have two swords: one from the purchase deck and one from the adventure deck. I decide to ditch one on a "Draw 1 Card" space during one of my turns.

If I ditch the sword from the purchase deck and then a character lands there on a later turn, do they still draw a card?

Same question for if I ditch the sword from the adventure deck.

We've been playing it as if the card on a draw card space is not an adventure card, we still draw a card.

Rulebook says "If there are already any cards of any type on the space (such as Adventure, Purchase, or Spell Cards), then only enough cards to make up the given number may be drawn." as well as "Talisman and Purchase Cards are treated in all respects like Adventure Cards, except that instead of being placed on a discard pile when not needed, they are instead returned to their appropriate deck and are available to other characters once more."

The rules also state: "Whenever a character is given or buys a Talisman or Purchase Card, the appropriate Talisman or Purchase Card should be
taken." The word "given" is a little unclear, but we've always played that when you draw a sword for example from adventure deck, it is discarded and replaced from the purchase deck. It's not exactly "given" to you if you draw it, so is this wrong? It's a rule we remember playing with from 2nd edition, though we could have been wrong back then as well... So in essence, you could never have more than 4 talismans in one game, as ones drawn from adventure deck are replaced by talisman cards.

"is given" means that you find yourself in a situation to gain a specific card. Examples:

- when you roll a 10 at the Temple you gain a Talisman (take a Talisman Card from appropriate deck)

- when you encounter the Weaponsmith in the Dungeon, he gives you a Weapon of your choice from the Purchase Deck (take a Sword or Axe Purchase Card).

Objects drawn from the Adventure Deck that are identical to Purchase or Talisman Cards shall be treated as any other Object; they're not supposed to be exchanged in any way. Not more than 4 Talismans in one game? What happens in a 5 or 6-player game, then? 1 or 2 players can't have a shot to victory, just because they're too slow to grab cards and can't rob others? This is not fair.

I see now that it was just a house rule we played since 2nd edition. For the record though, once all 4 talisman cards are taken, you:

a) have a very slim chance of drawing one from the adventure deck, and

b) don't really stand a chance of winning anyways if you aren't powerful enough to steal one from another player.

This is true for the basic set. Expansions give you some more options:

Reaper

- Transference Spell: you can swap positions with a Character on the Crown of Command while you are on the Plain of Peril.

- There's an extra Talisman within the new Adventure Cards

Dungeon

- Beat the Lord of Darkness with 8+ margin gets you straight to the Crown

- The Cloak of Feathers Treasure Card can be discarded in the Inner Region to teleport straight to the Crown

- There's also an extra Talisman in the Dungeon Deck and another in the Treasure Deck

Highland

- The Arnkell Relic Card can be discarded in the Inner Region to teleport straight to the Crown

I may have forgotten something, but this is what comes to mind.

Thanks for the quotes, the first paragraph answered the question I had for our first game.
