Rule clarification on Maester Aemon and Nymeria

By SerArthurDayne, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Wondering if anyone would be kind enough to clarify the ruling on a few cards.

First situation,

We have Maester Aemon, and 3 other characters in play on my side, lets say my opponent initiates a military challenge with a claim of one, I let it go past unopposed and he wins the challenge. Can I then target Maester Aemon for his claim, then tap him and save him ?

Also, same situation with having multiple characters out and one of them having Nymeria attached, can I target him for claim even though I have other characters out and use nymeria to save ?

The answer to both questions is yes, of course.

What you're probably thinking about is the rule that characters that cannot be killed cannot be chosen to be killed. There's nothing to stop you from choosing a character to die and then save them.

There are really two concept questions you are asking here:

1) Can a "save from being killed" effect be used against Military claim?

The answer to that is a resounding "yes." Military claim is no different from any other killing effect, so unless some card effect specifically prevents it, you are allowed to save the character and have them survive claim.

2) Does losing a military challenge require me to make choices that result in a character leaving play?

The answer to that is a resounding "no." Your choices are your own. By giving you the defender the ability to choose who dies when a military challenge is lost, the rules give the defender the opportunity to mitigate the damage. They can choose their weakest character (the attacker would invariably choose the strongest), or they can choose characters that can be saved or otherwise dodge the kill.

You can save from Military claim. It is even a good idea to do so. WInning a challenge is not so sacred in this game that the attacker is ENTITLED to a weaker position on the part of the defender. The best players assume they are going to lose challenges and find ways to turn that to their advantage.

Right right, but it is different with cards like beric donderrion and cold hands then ? For example same situation as above however i couldnt use them to soak the claim if i had other characters available.

"Cannot be Killed" characters, whether it be Beric, Coldhands, or a Noble while Power of Blood is out, cannot be chosen for M claim. The fact that they CBK means you cannot choose them for claim even if you want to, and if you have no other characters in play then you do not choose anyone for claim when losing a M challenge. Note that they cannot be chosen means that you cannot use a dupe on the CBK character as claim; if you have 2 characters in play, one of whom CBK, you must choose the other character to die even if you would rather discard the dupe and keep both characters.

In a nutshell, "cannot be killed" creates a targeting restriction: it is illegal to choose that character for an effect that tries to kill it. In essence, "cannot be killed" prevents the targeted kill from initiating on that character. Saves do not create a target restriction - they just prevent successful resolution once the targeted kill has initiated.
