How would you run a all Mechanicus game/ship?

By Chuckachu, in Rogue Trader

Weird thought that popped up today while explaining FFG's 40k line, how would a all Mechanicus group or a RT ship owned by a dynasty holding Explorator work in your groups?

My thought was instead of the "captain/RT" looking for profit he was searching for STCs and getting in all manner of trouble along the way....and is there rules written for void ship that is crewed ONLY by adepts and servitors?

I would give different Lore (Astromancy for one, Bio for another, etc) to your various Admech, one or two would have to be Skitarrii IMO, since most of the other players will be admechs.

Then instead of having all lexmechanics, have a biomagos, an auspex-magos,

Except maybe for the navigator, I would probably have a missionary too, trying to bring a part fo the crew to the true light of the Emperor but always plagued by the Cherubim!

An all-mechanicus crew would be very similar to a Girl Genius/Star Trek TNG crossover. A ship filled crazy maniacs on a quest for knowledge. Add to it malfunctioning servitors, cherubim with minds of their own, a cranky Skitarii Legate, a ship's machine spirit talking back, a Rogue Trader commanding from the engine room and a Lexmechnic who does miracles with paperwork to make it all turn a profit. And a greek chorus of Servo-Skulls singing hymns to the omnissiah in binary.

Rules-wise I would overhaul the normal careers to make it work for everyone. It's not hard to do this.

This is assuming that everyone is onboard for the idea and that everyone has agreed that everyone is going to play some kind of member of the AdMech. Otherwise, things will all be skewed.

First, I'd look at the Forge World, Void Born and Battlefleet origins and revise them as proper. If you plan to have AdMech members that are not from the Explorator Fleet, you might want to consider simply using the regular Homeworlds (discard those deemed unfitting, of course) and fold parts of the Forge World homeworld into them - since every explorer is going to be an AdMech.

Then I'd simply look over the Explorator and the other careers, adjusting the other careers as proper, making them all Explorator-like. Obviously, this would mean that the Explorator loses out some, but on the other hand - you're all Explorators one way or another already! As AdMechs, even if you're an Archmilitant or Voidmaster (Skitarii, obviously), everyone should absolutely have access to Mechanicus Implants and Logis Implant, as well as start with most the skills of the Explorator, such as Speak Language (Explorator Binary, Techna-Lingua), Tech-Use, Logic, Literacy, Forbidden Lore (Adeptus Mechanicus), Common Lore (Machine Cult, Tech). They should also readily have access to some (or almost all?) of the Advances of the Explorator, perhaps at a Rank later(?).

I am not sure what you would give the Explorator to compensate, but since it is unlikely that you will have a Missionary, I would look to that to compensate in a similar fashion. Such as Common Lore (Imperium), Forbidden Lore (Heresy/Heretek), Speak Language (High Gothic, Low Gothic), Medicae.

This would skew the entire power-level of your players quite a bit upwards, at least in the beginning in terms of starting skills and (possibly) talents. But I really do not see another way to do it, except either folding the Explorator career straight into all other careers, or tell everyone that they're playing the Explorator career or else.

And as Crisaron said, giving different lores to the various players is also a great idea. You're a team of explorators, the best young(?) upstarts in each of your fields, scouring the galaxy, for SCIENCE! Obviously the Skitarii here would be your bodyguards. Give them, like, I dunno, Pilot or Navigation or something. Or both.

The GM of my RT group made a handout containing the treaty between the Mechanicus and the Rogue Trader dynasty. I wrote the text (as I played the TP). He sent me two documents, one was written normally, using a nice block font, the other was written in binary. He converted the whole treaty into binary for me.

So don't joke about playing in binary.
