Using pack items as bonus tokens?

By diversionArchitect, in Tannhauser

My group has been letting any player use unused pack items as bonus tokens for their characters. I was wondering if other players do this. It is a fun way to add lots of customization, and hasn't seemed to overpower anyone. Outside of the rules-as-written does anyone see an issue with why you shouldn't do this?

The original reason for this was to add more options since we didn't have many bonus tokens, but I've really found it to add a lot to our games.

The limit is still 1 bonus token per character, and a maximum of 3 bonus tokens per team.

ive done this as well - doesnt seem to throw anything out of balance, just increases setup time. because of that, we only customized heroes, not troopers because we have multiples.

if i recall, the old rules said that you could choose the special item + any other 2 tokens for custom layouts, but never tried it that way

Not quite, under the old rules you could choose any three equipment tokens, but as a penalty for doing this you could not use the special item.

I used to play like this a lot, especially with Ramirez and the Schocktruppen.

Cool gang, ty for the responses =)

Miah: do you mean you played using pack items as bonus tokens, or you played using the custom pack without special item?

Also, Is it ok to have content as uploads? I was going to post my cards I made to speed up setup/cleanup but it has rule-text (i.e. the abilities) and didn't know if i'd get in trouble for it.

We've found it fun because it lets units really shine(with their own abilities) instead of a more generic bonus token. (because custom packs are-pretty awful... a custom pack for Yula means you might as well not bring her since her kruger is the main reason you bring her)

FFG usually doesn't mind about cards and rule summaries, etc, just don't try to sell them.

And no I never played as you suggested, but it doesn't sound like it would kill the game's balence or anything.
