Duplicates and put into play question

By Mortuss, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hey, question here : when i have put into play effect like No use for grief (DB) or Bastard Daughter (OSaS), can i use them to attach duplicates? e.g. No use for grief would put into play all the snakes and all their duplicates when Viper died. I thought i cant, it seems to contradict the rules in core set, but someone on the CardgameDB argued that i can, quoting the FAQ page 9 section 3.27 :" You may not play, put into play or take control of a unique card already in play that you own or control (except for PUTTING a duplicate on a card that you own or control). " Is that just an unfortunate choice of words? Also the whole thread here about duplicates coming out of shadows got me confused, so im asking.

Hope the question is not totally stupid and thx for answer :)

The rule for uniques say that you cannot play or put into play copies of unique cards you already have in play, except for duplicates. So duplicates can come into play as an exception to the usual limitation placed on unique cards.

So if you have a "put into play" effect and you use it on a copy of a unique card you already have in play, that second copy enters play as a duplicate on the copy that is in play. This works for any "put into play" effect, including bringing unique cards out of Shadows.

Note that the Shadow Hatchlings coming out of Shadows is somewhat different because they are not copies of the unique cards they duplicate - their passive ability text changes them into dupes.

Hi Ktom,

I now you are very on top of rulings, but I am not sure on a "put into play" effect being a legal play when you already control a unique. Can you quote where you found this information?

All I found was

1) Core Rulebook - p 19 "Thus, you cannot put into play or take control of a unique card which you already own or control (exscept for duplicates, see below)." and "If you have a duplicate (another card of the same name) of a unique card in your hand but you already control and own a version of that card currently in play, you may attach the duplicate from your hand to the unique card in play, for no gold cost, during your marshalling."

2) FAQ - p 10 (4.2) Duplicates mentions a few things about duplicates, but nothing about how or when you can play them.

3) Shadows and Duplicates, but that sounds very specific to cards in Shadows.

Thanks.

From the FAQ:

(3.27) Unique Cards and Changing Control
You may not play, put into play, or take control
of a unique card already in play that you own
or control (except for putting a duplicate on
a card that you own and control
), or that is in
your dead pile.

Thus you cannot take control of a unique
character that you already have in play. You
cannot play a unique card if your opponent has
taken control of another copy of that unique
card that you own.

Duplicates can only be played or put into play
on cards you own and control.

- - So right there, this entry says duplicates can be "put into play" so long as you own and control the card you are putting the dupe on.

Just in case you need more, the legality is referred to in the following entry:

(3.37) Unique Cards Entering Play from the Dead Pile
When putting a unique card into play from
your dead pile, that copy of the card does not
prevent itself from entering play. Multiple
copies of a unique card will prevent one
another from entering play from your dead
pile, unless those copies would all enter play
simultaneously
.

- - How would multiple copies of a unique card enter play from the dead pile simultaneously, except as dupes during a "put into play" effect?

So, applying this rule to a slightly different situation:

I have Drogon and Varamyr Sixskins ( Put 1 Creature character into play from your hand to return Varamyr Sixskins to your hand. At the end of the phase,if that Creature is still in play, discard it from play (cannot be saved).)

If I use Varamyr to put another Drogon into play, that Drogon will become a dupe (but not a creature), so at the end of the phase, it will not be returned to my hand.

Second, same situation, but I put shadows Black Hatchling into play. Its text tranforms it into a dupe, so at the end of the phase, it will not be returned to my hand.

Do I have all that correct?

Since dupes are textless, titleless, traitless cards, the "card" you put into play is effectively NOT in play anymore once it becomes a dupe. So the "return to hand" thing doesn't apply.

What about the timing on playing duplicates? When I play a unique and I have a duplicate in hand, does the opponent have an opportunity for an action before I place the dupe?

Yes. Playing a duplicate is just like any other player action.
