Clarification regarding Player battles---

By El Davicho, in Talisman Rules Questions

It seems pretty clear that you may only use Craft to battle another player if you have an ability that allows you to do so...

This may be obvious, but doesn't that give a distinct advantage to Strength based characters? Especially when it comes to encounters at the crown, if the game comes down to 2 characters one on one at the Crown, the Strength character is sure to win no?

In my experience (well over 100 times played), very rarely does the game come down to 2 or more characters battling it out on the crown of command. If it is the battle royale ending, whichever character enters coc first may choose whether to attack other characters using str or craft, even if they don't have the special ability to choose physhic combat (I believe). The inner region (not including dragon expansion) is easier to pass using craft since you don't have to dice with death which is where the big advantage for craft comes imo. Not to mention spell limit. Also some boss endings will require phsycic combat. So there is no real advantage having strength over craft.

Now there, somethings a bit wrong here.

Don't know how or why you think it is like that, but characters who have the ability to use psychic combat DON'T have to use it whenever they attack another player.

They may use it, but they certainly don't have to. Just read the text of the cards carefully.

Right, I understand that.

The last 2 games that I've played to completion have been 2 player games. In both cases, right when one character made a charge to the inner realms, the other character followed suit. In one case, I was at the crown and the very next turn the 2nd player killed the Lord of Darkness and got a lucky roll sending them to the crown as well.

In these two games, the craft heavy character had no ability/card allowing Psychic combat, so the games came down to a duel of Strength. Unless I have the rules wrong, when two players fight, even at the Crown of Command, they must use Strength unless an ability/card allows the attacking character to choose...

Thats right, yeah. - Now I get what this is about.

Well, if you play a craft character (without psychic combat ability), you may have a general disadvantage against a strength character in battle, but you (should/) could have had spells to help you win.

But since you didn't, I'd say you were a bit unlucky.

Don't know if you have any expansions with them, but I really like some of the alternative endings.

Part of why I don't like the standard ending that much - most of time, it just takes too long to win even you hurried to reach the crown first.

I like the endings with warlock quests/quest rewards - First to reach the crown? - Victory is yours.
