Dabbler?

By Mighty Jim 83, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Does anyone know what's happened to AGoT Dabbler? there doesn't seem to have been an update since Gates of the Citadel

is this a temporary lull, or is the site dead and doomed to grow rapidly more outdated?

can people recommend another, similarly simple card search site (as opposed to the more complex deck-builders out there) that is kept up-to-date

www.agotcards.org/card seems to update at the drop of a hat (though I'm more partial to Dabbler's layout)

I agree that overall it's a better design, however it doesn't work as well on my Tablet anymore. :( Still does, but it doesn't fit as pretty and the pop-up box is impossible to close.

iOS or Android?

Until I can use this site without having to register my info it is a still birth as far as I'm concerned. I can't trust a site that requires me to give information about myself for something as inconsequential as a card game. I get enough spam as it is and I don't need anyone selling my information.

I'll stick with cardgamedb and dabbler.

I've never once received an email from AGOTCards outside of first registering there, and I see no reason to think our information will be sold. But obviously registering is a major deal breaker for you. If you don't mind registering though, I'd it's the best resource the game has. Different strokes for different folks.

There is literally no reason for it to require registration. If it was the best resource why not leave it as an option for people who decide they really believe in it and see a reason to register? IF I can't even see what features it has without registering it fails epically for me. I understand others have different wants and needs.

I think cardgamedb is sufficient anyway.

I don't mind registering, but it'd be nice if I didn't get an error message every time I tried to register. It's especially annoying when people link to agotcards.org as opposed to an open database, because I simply can't use it.

I can totally see where you're coming from. At first I was wary, too, but I registered anyhow. But they people who create the site put in their own time, money and effort, and they can run it however they wish. I think it is perfectly reasonable for them to ask people to become part of the community if they want to use the features on the site. Maybe if cardgamedb had mandatory registering, it's forums wouldn't be so underfrequented. I agree, though, that agotcards could make it more clear what the site is actually like before you register.

from site FAQ ( http://www.agotcards.org/blog/?page_id=59 ):

Q: Why is it mandatory to register in order to enter the site?
R: More than a reason. First of all, it is important to us to know who is using the site, so that we can alway ban fake users, trolls and so on (thanks to your user reports too!). Second reason: we get no money at all for the site, so we can keep it ad-free. We pay our servers. We have no unlimited bandwith and opening the site to everyone would create a much, much bigger traffic here that we don’t know if we can handle.

Since at the expiration of the contract we will change hosting service to a more reliable and powerful one, we are working on a read only version of the site for non registered users.

PS since I still think Dabbler is the BEST search card engine (agotcards is meant to be a comunity site) if there is need to help updating it i would help in that maybe giving some data extract from OCTGN2/agotcards database. Just contact me.

Gualdo,

I think making a read only version for non-registered users is the way to go. I don't think anybody can rightfully expect to be able to add/edit content on the site without being registered. I think what upset some people is not the need to register, but that you don't even see the site and what it does without registering.

That said, you know that I really appreciate agotcards and all the work you and the other Andrea put into it, right? You're doing one hell of a job.

Regarding Dabbler, I think the only thing needed to get it updated again might be to send Denis the scans of the missing chapter packs. I feel kinda bad, because I always wanted to scan and send them and never quite got around to it. You already have the scans, so maybe you could just send them to him? I sent Denis an E-Mail asking if he'd update the site if he had the scans. When he replies, I'll tell you.

k, give him my mail if needed and I will give him scans without problems.

I offered to keep him updated about a month ago since it would be trivial to update his stuff at the same time I updated CardGameDB but never heard back from him.

I've done as well with Agotcards according to recommendation I got from one of leading person:

Andrzej Kozlowski I'm getting sick with this login problem. I use four different computers and every 2nd time I have issue getting access to this site. It's getting annoying
Gualdo .change site

I think recommendation is clear you have issue with our site change it. OK no problemo I will support from now cardgamedb.com.

I don't want to take parts, but c'mon Berto, that post was really useless. More, you wrote a really long (and not so nice) post on a previous thread, so it was like a "hit me!" shout.

We all know that agotcards has problems, and unfortunately there's no easy solution ATM. Maybe Gualdo has been too instinctive, but you're not a victim.

P.S.: there's no need to report what was wrote on the post I reported, but if needed it's not a problem.

The Polish site has lots of info, but it just makes everything really cluttered - hard to find stuff

http://www.agotcards.org is a nightmare - not only does it make you register, but it insists on uploading a photo as well! i didn't need to submit that much info to apply to university. After what seemed like an age of trying to register (probably about 5 minutes) it eventually all ends in an error message, and only when you go to the homepage (as opposed to following a link there) do you find out its not internet explorer compatible.

Card Game DB seems to be the way forward - it was being weird on me yesterday, but that seems to be a one-off glitch (it also has LoTR in the same place, which makes life easier.)

Hi everybody,

in so many years of AGOT playing I never registered here, but now I did because I want to reply to berto for the things he wrote here.

First of all: since now you "will support cardgamedb", I want to ask you: when, exactly, did you start supporting agotcards? If you're talking about the post you wrote where you complain about everything and saying that our arguments are (I quote) "stupid"... well, that's not a "support" imho.

I won't report here what we said each other via PM because I respect your privacy, but I'd like to point out that all these complains started only AFTER those PMs, so I see kinda of a link between those PMs and your complaints. Wich, let me point this out, we said more than once must be written on the blog in order to avoid spamming the dashboard for players who are there fro browsing cards and stuff and who don't give a **** about bugs and sort of.

Now my part. Just to clarify for the 100th time:

  • Nobody pays me, so I don't pay anyone like gualdo or jaq for their help. We all have a work and we dedicate our spare time to the site, at the best of our ability. I'm sorry if that's not enough for you.
  • We pay our servers, so we try to do the best with the servers we have, and that let us keep the site ad-free and (imho) cool. Ads are not cool.
  • We do the best we can withouth asking nothing to the community

The point is: all your "questions" received a normal reply, but you still keep complaining on things we already replied. Just to clarify: we know agotcards as those two-three "major" issues that I'm trying to fix, in the meanwhile I'm trying to release the bloody talkboard and the **** new dashboard to let all of you guys talk and discuss easily than anywhere else. New decks and cards overview pages are coming, with tons of new TOP CHARTS sections (most voted, most commented and stuff like that). I work on this everyday, so you have to understand one thing: nobody is kicking you out of the site: I'm an admin, not a censorship guy. But please keep in mind that words are stones: weight them before you write or speak because people may get them wrong.

The rest is up to you

I like all four sites, and use them all for different purposes.

I use Dabbler for quick reference, because it's very fast and easy to use. Man, I really hope it gets updated again. Without it, there's something missing.

I use cardgamedb mainly for the deckbuilder, which is excellent. I also like the articles.

I use agotcards for discussions about individual cards and for the card ratings.

Rogue's site is the one I use the least, admittedly, but it has its uses, and I'm glad it's there. It's fast too, and it has some features no other site has, like the option to search specifically for attachment and location hate.

Agotcards is a fan project and not a commercial community site from a company who's making profit through their members. The devs sacrifice their free time to work on the project and it isn't really helping to spam the dashboard with demands & rants instead of giving constructive advices thorugh the support page or per mail. You cannot seriously be offended that Gualdo advises you to change the site after all the stuff you have posted. Your behaviour on the dashboard was really improper.

I want to take part in that, as being one of the people which are annoyed by these several "bugs, that are either no bugs or just intentional design choices" posts. And honestly i was really glad to find the announcement that you would now "prefer" another website, cause it spares me the time to scroll up or down on some themes that have been written and or discussed daily.

It´s not like it´s a bad thing to try to take part in the design of a website or making suggestions, but repeating the stuff all over again in the common section (dashboard) is in fact really annoying.

~Yes, i realized people will now catch me up on the "black border- and / or melee thing", but i still think it´s different if you offer a free service or a long time service for which you get paid. ;-)
