Advanced defences?

By Crazy Aido, in WFRP Rules Questions

Improved dodge, improved parry, improved block, improved gaurded position.

Does anyone place a restriction on when or how these can be taken, since it says "advanced" in the description?

Also, if someone takes a specialisation in, say, block, do they let them turn that into a misfortune dice for their opponent when they get attacked, in my head it's the only functional use for it.

Thoughts, discussion, pointless flamewars welcome...

You can take them at character creation, if you fulfill the requirements (STR4/TO4/AG4). I don't place any restrictions for buying them except for that.

As per the core rules, no you don't get to add extra black dice. If you specialize in for example dodge, you get the fortune die when you roll for dodging. It might for example be when rocks are falling down around you (from catapults for example) then you could roll to dodge those rocks or if a giant is killed and starts falling in your direction. Parry/Block are harder to come up with "alternative uses", at least for me.

But it is easy to houserule that these specializations add misfortune to the enemy instead of fortune to the PC.

That would be the sort of thing I'd be inclined to houserule, at least to make the xp worth spending.

Yes, we've been going with this house rule for some time and it's not game breaking in any way and it works nicely. One black die doesn't do that much of a difference in combat after all. :)

No, there are no restrictions, other than attribute requirement.

They are called "advanced", because they replace you "basic" actions.

As for specialisation in dodge, block and similar, I would actually give this one misfortune die when the proper card is used, why not? It's not that much, and it makes the specialising in this a bit more useful.
