Dark Pharaoh Mixing?

By RocksLikeToast, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I just picked up Miskatonic and the Revised DP and can't wait to open them up later tonight... but for those who have experimented with the new DP... is it best to remove all, some, or none of the old DP from the mix?

I was thinking about still leaving the barred encounters and only removing cards that were duplicated in the new box but still unsure.

So far the only things I've left in were the otherworld encounters that make you fight an AO one on one.

The patrol mechanic replaces the barred mechanic.

I've retained the Other World and Mythos Cards from the original, along with the Allies and the Barred from Neighborhood cards; incorporated the Patrol Marker and Exhibit Encounter cards and Marker ; and blended the S pells and Exhibits

The easiest solution is simply to use the new stuff only. The only versions of old things I left in were a couple with more thematic wording, and almost all instances of the surprise mechanic.

For a more detailed breakdown, see this thread:

Revised vs. Original: what I replaced and what I kept, and why.

Note that the three dual-color cards are included in the new version (although the rules on when to handle them are not).

Since I have two copies of the dual-color cards, I pasted over one to make you battle Hastur when in Lost Carcosa.

Take it all out. Honestly, you won't miss any of it: Revised replaces and improves upon Original in all ways that matter.

Well, that's perhaps a bit unfair: the ways that "don't matter" really depend on your personal level of nostalgia. Tibs and the Professor have an attachment to some of the "old ways", and sought to preserve them. Which is fine. On the other hand, I'm grateful to be officially rid of the thing, and thrilled that I have a complete replacement to love. Which is equally fine. Whatever you decide to keep is solely based on how much you WANT to keep it: Revised doesn't need any of it to function spectacularly.

Lovable. Bookmarked. Thank you (I still have to try the new Pharaoh, but I'm not in hurry. Just wanted to play a game against each AO of the game adding the various components of MH first!)

I never mix my Pharaohs. I just use the new set now.

Well, I kept in most instances of surprise , but mostly for a historical curiosity. Others will not care to do that and I understand why.

But there are a couple of Revised cards that are not changed except that the flavor text was harmed (as in, perfectly valid words made less correct ) or removed outright. That is a good reason to make an exception to "never mixing."

I kept both sets of encounters. So what if there are both Barred and Patrol mechanics? With 50+ encounter cards for every location, it's not really an issue and it marginally increases the chances of getting Exhibit Items from encounters, albeit at the expense of getting Co1000 membership, which no-one ever takes anyway, cos the ecnounters are so lousy.

Spells, Exhibits items, etc. I decided which ones I preferrred and ran with them. Where an exhibit item was a duplicate (which is about a half dozen) I kept all copies in. There are at least two fan made expansions with about 20-30 or so extra exhibit cards, plus the fiev bonus ones from Miskatonic Horror, so it's not like it's an issue for me.

Other stuff, I decided which mechanic I preferred and ran with that. I kept both sets of Private Investigators - it's not like avoiding getting Barred on top of avoiding being Delayed is going to be overpowered. I also play that Joe starts with the PI cards and Jacqueline with the Psychic card, but that they don't get the signing on bonuses. I'm tempted to make PI available for 5 monsters / 1 gate at the Police Station.

Gate cards and Mythos cards. Only the new ones.

Just like with tea & coffee, people have their own preffered blends - it's a matter of taste.

:(

My first time teaching the game to a player, he dropped a spell card directly into his tea.

Got it out, brushed it off... perfectly fine. Gotta appreciate FFG quality.

And I'll bet that afterward, the tea tasted magical ;'D

Or you could just provide biscuits (cookies), then players won't resort to dunking the spell cards.

That's why I'm not allowing anyone drinking/eating/etc. into the game.

Can't say I've learned my lesson, but for the only other two times when someone spilled a drink onto Arkham, it was a glass of water, and it was specifically onto Patrice Hathaway (or rather, a home-designed reprint of her).

::Laughter:: now there's a houserule I can stand by, no eating or drinking unless you're playing a character I dislike.

Especially drinking can help *a lot* in making sad things better :-)

So what would happen if someone dropped the whiskey in their whiskey?

It wouldn't cause me to lose any sanity.

Obviously you could prevent two sanity loss by drinking it, while causing the game owner to reduce maximum sanity to zero. In other words, don't blame me if he or she goes Maniac after you try it.
