Fear of Winter v. Darkstar

By lahomen, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Fear of Winter reads "Each player cannot play or put into play more than 1 card from his or her hand until you reveal a new plot card."

Darkstar reads: "If Darkstar would be discarded from your hand or deck, put him into play instead."

I marshal, and play a card. I have one card in my hand, Darkstar. My opponent wins an INT challenge against me, which would discard Darkstar. Normally, FOW does not permit a second card to be put into play from hand. Normally, Darkstar would be put into play here.

Both cards are not optional, or responses. They are mandatory. What happens?

I believe that the "cannot" is absoloute and must be obeyed. Therefore he goes to the discard pile...I think.

Correct. FoW "wins" because it is absolute. Darkstar's replacement effect is not. Darkstar is discarded.

I'd say discard pile, and have an unsuccessful resolution of the replacement effect because of the limit created by Fear of Winter.

Isn't he considered discarded anyway :P

Better hope he is discarded from your deck that round then. :-D
