Missing attacks

By McRae, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Ok, so in a standard Descent quest, how often do you (everybody) miss? In the last game me and my friends played, we played Quest 2. It lasted about 6 hours, and we all missed at least a dozen times. It seemed abnormal. The few times we played Quest 1, there was MAYBE a total of 5 misses.

The scientific answer is that you will miss once for every 6 attacks.

However, our last 3 campaign sessions of RtL, the miss rate was close to around 40%. 4 in a row is our record

I have missed 14 times in a row.

You will also, of course, miss more often when the stealth die is involved, or miss due to range if you attack from too far away.

But almost all attacks have a 1/6 miss chance. Sometimes you get a lucky or unlucky run; that's how dice work.

We've definitely wondered this. Problem is, you remember the misses and the runs of misses far more than you remember the hits. My heroes seriously wondered whether the big cross unbalanced the dice, but when I rolled it 100 times it came up with 20 misses. I'd recommend you try the same if you're in any doubt.

after 188 rolls I have

blue 17.6% miss

white 16.5% miss

red 23.9% miss

Your dice will differ I am sure.

You may call me lazy, but I rolled 6 times each:

blue: 2Xs

white: 2Xs

red: 2Xs

I heard a story about one college professor who gave his students an assignment to either flip a coin 500 times and write down the results, or just make up 500 results. When the students turned in their lists, he would look them over, and then say whether they had actually flipped the coin or made up the results. He was right pretty much all the time.

Most people's intuitions about how random results ought to look are very, very bad.

I still remember the first game where power potions were involved: I was emphazising the use of power pots to my enemies (heroes) and I did really meant to be helpful.

So they began to use powerpots, and EVERY roll they made with a power pot that evening came up as a miss! I was really sorry lol

A object lesson in why you ALWAYS Aim a Power potion attack.

Well, usually. In RtL. In vanilla, "never, ever, aim, ever" is a pretty good rule-of-thumb. Of course, if you're not playing RtL, you're probably not drinking a power potion anyway, as it will often give you fewer dice than if you drank a vitality potion and spent fatigue.
