Just thought I'd ask - how big of battles have people been doing when they want to go big? 350 points a side? 500 points a side? 12x9? 12x12? 15x15? Just trying to get a sense of how big people are playing when they're going 2 on 2, full out battles...
How large is large?
Well, I've never played anything bigger than 300 a side, 12x9 battles. But I feel it certainly can go bigger, more in the AP department than the board size. Board-wise I wouldn't go much beyond 12x9, at the most 12x12 or 15x9, though I'd be hard-pressed to find a table big enough. AP-wise, I think 400 a side is a nice ceiling.
The Operation Seelowe has missions that are tasked at 350 points a side. I'm simply curious if people have tried 400 point or even 500 point battles, and how big of playfields they've done it on. We've got a pretty big set of gaming tables at our local gaming store, and I'm wondering how big a truly "big" battle would get. I'd love to hear from people who've played with some truly large scale encounters.
Biggest I've done is 300 pts on a 12*9 board. I think I would hesitate to go any bigger, or else it will start to feel like I'm playing 2 games at once, as some units will be off on one side of the board fighting and the others will be on the other side of the board. That sort of thing just naturally happens with bigger games.
That said, if heavy walkers cost around 100 points (wouldn't surprise me), my opinion may change, just because there would be fewer units on the board with higher points.
We did 350 each on a 12 X 12 map. It gives more room for tactics. You can move the FAST units quickly, but they do not end up in the middle of the action on turn 2.
I am planning to run a GIANT battle at Hurricon in Orlando on the 9/24, probably 1000 points a side for Axis and 800 points for Allied, with 3 players per side. It is going to be an assault on the Allied fortifications in Iceland. It will include a RANDOM air dropping of 400 points, about 130 per Axis player. Just going to use a coordinate die system. Should be exciting.

I'd love to hear how this turns out and see pictures. When you're talking about "a side," how are you diving up 1000 points for 3 people? Just straight down the line (333 each?), or letting them divvy it up by themselves as they put it together? We've been playing some small skirmishes on 12x9 maps, often with buildings or wreckage in the middle, and that's been working fairly well for us.
Each Axis player gets 200 points to deploy normally, and another 133 he drops onto the field behind the enemy lies or wherever fate puts them. The Allied players will have good defensive positions and 800 points, or 265 each. Each Allied player will have a dual 17 pdr battery on his wall section, with a limited arc of fire. The Allied players will all start with 100 points in hard cover deployed along a wall. The batteries will have soft cover. Each Allied player will then have 100 points to reinforce with, or sally forth, whatever. The Allies will also hide 2 mine-fields each, within specified deployment zone. The land mines will do 1/H damage to Infantry, and 1/1 damage to armor. Once triggered, they remain marked on the board, but units walking over them receive heavy cover saves.
The Axis objective is to capture the enemy command post. The Allied objective is to stop this.
The Axis is not limited in which troops it can drop, only where they land being random.

Awww poop, I just looked into attending Hurricon(I live in Orlando), but pre-registration is now closed. Would love to come and play a few games with ya, but $35 at the door cost is too rich for my blood when I'm only into one miniatures game.
But if you want to hook up(nerd gaming hookup, get yo mind out of the gutter!) at a local gaming store, send me a PM or something.

Heh, with two original core sets, a spare medium & light walker for each side, plus some other stray squads, there are a couple of missions in there I don't think I could handle at 350 points, namely the two paradrop ones where you are all infantry at one and all walkers at the other.

Sounds like a fun mission though. I think I'd have the side with the walkers have "stolen" walkers from the enemy's side, to make up the numbers.
