Looking for a starting point

By brakiss, in Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game

I'm looking to get into Warhammer: Invasion. I'm not new to card games but i'm tired of having to by pack upon pack to even compete in games like Magic. Warhammer seems like a good choice and looks like a fun game my son and I can play. I know i'll have to buy the core set for sure, but where do I go from there? Any advice or direction would be great. Thanks in advance.

my advice is to play Game of Thrones instead. this game is on its way down.

Do you mean down as not being produced or down as far as gameplay?

Thanks...glad I didn't waste any money on this game yet...

Wow...I can't believe this still hasn't been commented on by anyone. What crappy advice to give someone who is interested in the game. How can a fan base be built if people who are interested are being driven off by disgruntled ex players. you've had a lot of good advice for new player in the past F7...but this is not your best advice to date. the only way to find out if it is a game that someone is going to enjoy is if that person tries playing the game for themself. Don't discourage someone from trying.

Here is my take as someone who has gotten into WI about 4 months ago with no prior exposure to Warhammer or any CCG/LCG. To be quite clear, I am a casual player with no intention to ever play this competitively other than in a friendly tournament among friends and like-minded players.

I find this game tremendously enjoyable. It has strategy, a lot of interaction, decent complexity and a great theme. I find it very playable just using the Core Set but the extensions are great and will add a lot to the game (I have in the mean time extended my cards with AOU and MD). From now, I will pick whatever is interesting to play, but I can well imagine ending up with the whole set of cards. I would prefer having 3 cards of each of course, but I assume that the Corruption Cycle will be reprinted in that format and as a casual player this is not a knock-out anyway. In terms of the temporary imbalance of the game when dominant metas emerge, I guess this is very difficult to avoid but is usually fixed with the next cycle or some banning/restrictions. On top of that, the guys in this forum and over at BGG are a great help and fun to talk to.

So for me, getting into WI was the right decision and I would highly recommend to at least have a few plays before you make up your mind. The only caveat would be if you do not believe you will find other gamers for WI in your vicinity, but then there is still OCTGN and the chance to convert someone. Heck, my wife is asking me to play now and she was a no-no-gamer. You should give it a go.

Thanks for the input guys. I did decide to at least pick up the core set to try out. I'm looking for a casual game my son and a few friends can play on game nights.

If you do decide to stick with it, I would suggest picking up the Assault on Ulthuan box set, as that brings capital boards for the elf and dark elf races, as well as a number of cards for them. After that, it is mostly packs and it becomes very difficult to say what to get and not to get, if you are going to pick and choose. I've always felt that is one of the problems with the game, is having no real starting point after the fairly obvious(Core Set, Ulthuan). As an example, I got into the game in February and I bought everything available at that time, which with a good deal on Ebay, still came to about $200 USD. Buying everything will be significantly more expensive now, as there are several more packs available, as well as the Legends box expansion.

As an aside, you may have seen a great deal to complaining here in the forums. You can count me as one of those who think the game has lost some steam recently. However, as a casual player myself, I think it is still a fine investment, if that is going to be your play style. There is just a ton of stuff out for casual players in this game.

Are there any sets that come with 3 of each card?

The Core Set, the High Elf/Dark Elf expansion and the first cycle of battle packs (The Corruption Cycle) don't come with 3 copies.

The rest come with 3 copies of each card.
