Reward system, Good Idea??

By Rexasure, in Deathwatch Gamemasters

I have composed a medal reward system for the next campain i do, i wanted to know if they were good.

Basically, they have a relivence to the mission being played. For example, a Recon Mission would have a reward called Ghost Medal.

Every medal has a check list for the player to obtain it. Keeping with the Ghost medal example, the player would have to 1- Not be seen 2- kill someone without being seen 3- Pick pocket an enemy

The reward for this would be something like 1- A sniper Rifle 2- 100xp 3- 2 Renown

I'd like to know what you think

Thanks

Sounds like you want achievements in Deathwatch. Firstly, there's already a system in place for this sort of thing in Rites of Battle in the form of Honors. These are actual Astartes medals, badges and ranks which Marines receive for accomplishing certain tasks. For example, the Marksman's Honor. It's a golden bolt-shell charm given to a Marine who proves himself with ranged weapons- basically, shows himself to be a good and reliable sniper. Not only does it praise the Marine's abilities with ranged weaponry, it also marks him out as being someone a Sergeant can trust to pick off a Tau Ethereal from 1000 meters. For the most part, these don't carry a major mechanical effect. The Iron Skull marks a Marine as a Sergeant- aka, someone who's trusted to lead a squad of Marines. The Iron Halo grants the wargear of the same name. The Crux Terminatus (Terminator Honors) gives a Marine access to Tactical Dreadnought Armor, assuming he has the requisite Renown rating. I think a few others have mechanical effects, but they're mostly decoration. The idea of giving a Marine a medal like you're describing along with experience, renown, and especially items runs counter to the spirit of the Astartes and the Deathwatch. It's kind of against the fluff for a Marine to be striving for that sort of perfection in exchange for something. The Astartes desire perfection for perfection's sake- which can lead to the same place as the Emperor's Children, to be sure. Secondly, this sort of thinking is very gamist and interferes with roleplaying, in my opinion. Given, that's more of a personal feeling and you may WANT your game to have that sort of feel. In short, that sort of an achievement system has no place in my game, but if you want it for yours, play ball.

On another note, I have to say that just receiving the honors really made my Kill-Team feel good. One of my players runs a Space Wolf Rune Priest (Librarian) who is very conscientious of the lives of innocents. Because (s)he (player is female) showed such concern at risk to his/her own skin, his Watch Captain (a Salamander) saw fit to give him a Salamander-specific honor that I created, the Drake Scale. The Marine was honored, the player was overjoyed.

Well, i should have explained that my players are not familiar with the concept that Space Marines are the most lethal warriors in 40K. one is the kind that would throw a krak granade in a lake 'cause it's red' . i was hoping that these medals would make them (him especially) more space marine like.

Heh, okay, fair enough, makes sense.

For your purposes, it sounds like you've got a good idear...good luck in 'guiding' their behaviour...and, if you haven't yet, do check out Rites of Battle and its rewards system...it was a nice touch, and I found it quite useful; it may prove helpful to you.

I would also use renown similarily. Admittedly, encouraging is better than discouraging - but if krak grenades are requisitioned only to be used fr dynamite-fishing, it's perfectly reasonable that the quartermaster says "Don't think so, laddie"

Also, the Quartermaster is Irish. ;)
