Rules "medium" and a new character sheet draft

By Emirikol, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I'm not happy with the 'rules lite' concept as I still use Advanced Action cards, wound cards, disease cards, magic chaos cards, and insanity cards. Here's a character sheet for those who aren't all or nothing. Please make suggestions as it's just a rough draft/rough concept.

I'm not happy with my sheet either. If you'd want we could perhaps work together to create a better sheet as I'm almost on the same pages with your ideas and vision.

Sounds good. My players repeatedly complain about the character sheets (you'd think they'd make their own...)

I've often wanted to make my own but have never tried. Perhaps i should join in and lend my 1.5 cents.

Gitzman

Now that's a collaboration I would like to see.

My one request, though, would be that if you make a color character sheet, consider making a version good for printing on monochrome printers as well. I'm not always fortunate enough to print things at work and only have a black and white printer at home.

The more merrier. I believe that all ideas should be considered and discussed. Colored sheet is mainly a question of the background so it shouldn't be much of a problem. If we get a good artist to do it. ^_^

So if we are starting with these (pictures open in a new window) what should be changed:

From Emirikol's origanl idea I like the separate advancement page. It would free space a great amount.

Also I still think that it should/could be a character sheet with multiple pages but only in so that the additional pages add similar additional data. So most of the game mechanics (hopefully all) should be located on one page, background and fluff things on another, advancement on third and so on. In this way everybody could print out just the things they would want to use.

Do away with all pre-printed skills. Really, nobody is going to be using THAT many skills, and having to run through the list to check whether you have a skill trained, just wastes time. I think the effort of writing 4-5 more words on a sheet during creation, is not worth reserving 1/4 of a sheet of space. Have 12 lines for both Basic & Advanced skills available. With a little indentation, add specialisations here as well. Let the GM tell you if you can roll on something when it's not trained. (Or provide a single small chart somewhere on the table with basic skills, so that people can consult it if they doubt whether something can be rolled untrained)

Fatigue/Stress/Wounds/Corruption are all some form of damage that can be tracked in the same way as the stance-meter in your suggested draft image... Just slide a paper-clip on the edge over the correct value, and you're set.

Same for fortune points

Why write down talents & actions when you have the cards. You're already tracking them with the "advances". Leave these off as well.

Make 4 sheets (or 2 2-sided)

- Physical (stats, skills, damage, fatigue, armor, weapon, etc. for use in contested rolls)
- Mental/Social/History (physical description, past deeds, family, goals, growth during campaign, faith, ...)
- Career (All career related stuff as mentioned on the above draft)
- equipment, money, gear, current "mission" + notes (I find for infrequent sessions, players are better off writing something down anyway, why not give them the room right there)

I'm trying to think of a way to use the action deck as a real "deck" as well, rather than having to spread out all cards on the table, with 18 tracker tokens spread out on various cards, but so far no luck :)

I've got some ideas brewing and have sketched out a few concepts of what i'd like to see. I'm hoping to put it into practice next week and have somethign to show for it.

My goal is to provide only the information players really need to see while playing on one sheet and teh other book keeping stuff elsewhere. I also want to improve the layout to make new players able to better udnerstand how to construct their dice pools and what parts of their character give them which dice.

Gitz

I have to say, I like the look of the one above, I just need them to have the necessary stuff they need to play right in front of them.

DC: Very nice sheet. My players were mostly mad b/c there was so much wasted space and nothing was lined up to be useful.

Good job.

I'll try to get cracking tomorrow as I have some free time. If there's anybody willing to work on this though I can share the .psds as I'm now quite busy writing the sequel to Wanted.

"Tomorrow" turned into four days but suddenly I had the inspiration to work on this. I am pretty excited about this now. It looks neat and simple (though certainly not finished).

Comments, comments, comments?

I have not had a chance to read them in detail but really like what I see! I normally never use character sheets but make a new one for each new character but I think WFRP3 needs a good "official" one so great work everyone.

One thing I immidately thought of was that I would like to see one good symbol, ideally Sigmar's Comet on the two other sheets. Perhaps a minor comment but I would like the balance between a chaos star and a Sigmar's Comet; representing the moral grey scale of the game.

That's actually a good comment. I doubt that few would have said that even though many would certainly think it. Any ideas of where to but it? A large one on the middle background?

Keep in mind though that if there's anyone who wants to do a good looking colored background for this the shaded pictures will most likely be removed.

Doc, those look fantastic! I would love to use them, but will they work with a Rules Full gamestyle?

I don't see why not. Only thing you will have to do is write down the skills the character has. If you notice something else missing just point it out and it can be worked out. Quite possibly.

These are work in progress.

first sheet: specialisations, not specialations :)

(sorry, can't help it ^^ )

But you DID help! Any other miss-spellings?

From your comment I conclude the sheets are PERFECT otherwise. gran_risa.gif

I have to admit, they're much more well laid out, however not having the basic skills listed is a real problem. Our group is well into their 2nd career and someof the guys have 8 skills+ trained. Also, we use a lot more specializations than that.

I prefer having all the basic skills listed for reference. Repeatedly having to look up which characteristic a basic skill goes with would be a pain.

Great work otherwise.

I think the basic skills can still be fitted in this version instead of the lines. I'll probably also try to add a couple lines extra for the Advanced Skills just be sure.

Keep the comments coming. I would suspect there is quite a lot to improve still. I'll make the "final" changes during this weekend (or at the very least Monday) so I can print them out to be tested to my own group for Tuesday.

How about the visual aspect? Is a parchment background mandatory? Should there be more symbols? Boxes? Etc.

Move the talents up above the weapons, as they are usually associated with skills anyways.

Visually it seems fine. Special abilities is misspelled. I'll think of more later. I'm going to encourage my players to come here and comment as well as they constantly nag me about how inefficient the official sheet is from the PG.

DOc,

Take a look at this character sheet as well. It's for burning wheel (Mouse Guard): www.burningwheel.org/wiki/images/a/ad/MGFillableSheet.pdf

It might give you some ideas on layout and what's possible.

jh

Why are there 5 boxes for the career transition?

I thought the standard cost would be 4 with reductions for dedication bonus and similarity...

Just saw them. :D I kinda feel like my work here is done.
