A Few Newbie Questions

By Valhalla, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hi all, so let me first say that I have been involved in a few different RPG groups and was interested in trying out the warhammer fantasy rpg. I have some doubts though and was hoping the gaming community here could answer some questions I had.

My main concern is about the sytem itself. From what I can infer, it seems to rely completely on a unique dice system. If possible I'd like to know some details about it. Being a personal fan of FFG's other system (i.e. Deathwatch, Rogue Trader, etc.) is it similar to these or radically different? If different is there any way to adapt it or use a more traditional system? I haven't had a lot of luck with "unique" dice systems in the past and would like to know if there is a way around it.

I was also curious as to the content that has been released. Both my GM and most of the group I am in are huge fans of chaos, and would most definately wish to know if playing a chaos-aligned character is a viable option. There is also the concern about enemy stats that have been released. As a group, we mostly enjoy fighting against the enemies we know and love from tabletop, and I was wondering if any of the monsters/creatures published in the Army books have been released.

I would like to say thank you in advance for your comments, and would like to ask that please no video links, as any type of video does strange and baffling thingsto my computer.

the dice mechanic is the heart of the game. converting it would be complicated. it is IMO the best part of the game. in nearly 30 years of gaming i've never come across a dice system that is as flexible and informative as this one.

Hi Valhalla and welcome to the forums!

I personally think WFRP3 to be one of the most interesting system there is but am also aware that not all share my enthusiasm.

When starting WFRP I think you can get a good idea about the game by visiting my blog especially the Starter's Guide to WFRP.

If you're looking to try to play Warhammer Fantasy using a more "traditional" system and something that is reminiscent of FFG's Warhammer 40K RPGs, you'd probably be better off pursuing the 2nd Edition of WFRP. It's system (if you're not familiar) is pretty close to Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader/et al.

The mechanics are pretty tightly woven into the game experience in WFRP3e and it would take quite a bit of work, I feel, to change or replace them. Again, if a more traditional style of ruleset is what you're looking for WFRP2e will probably make you happier.

I'm one of those folks who really enjoys the new mechanics. They have proven quite evocative and give a lot of flexibility especially to GMs. But as is evidenced by the ongoing controversy of WFRP3e in the gaming community, there is plenty of difference of opinion on it.
