Experience for Elite advances

By Dhobbry, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

I'm pretty sure I've seen it mentioned in several places on the internet that only experience spent for advances from the career path schemes counts toward the career rank progression. That would mean that elite advance experience doesn't push you toward the next rank. I've looked in the print material and there's no mention of such a thing. So I'm asking here: is it an actual rule or someone's house rule?

Thanks.

I don't think there is anything that say's experience spent on elite advances doesn't count towards rank. In the game I'm in it counts towrds rank.

I think what you mean is the staring packages in the IH, my psyker purchased living nightmare for 300exp and that didn't get counted towards the exp need towards ranks, so when I spent my 400 exp only 100 exp was counted towards my second rank. Also I think you can spend exp points to get rid of insanity and corruption points at the rate of 100 exp per point reduction in insanity/corruption.

I seem to recall that only XP spent "in the ranks" (including on characteristics advancements) count towards your Rank. If that is correct, then Elite advances and Insanity reduction do not apply.

This has always confused me. Can somebody give me a page quote on this (or an actual quote)? That would be really useful.

Page 42 of the DH main book says (under "Gaining Ranks") that "Characters automatically gain Ranks by spending xp. Once a character’s total spent xp reaches the necessary amount, the character’s Rank increases. Note, Rank increases always occur after an Advance has been taken." There's nothing about any restrictions or limitations there (other than a rank increase only occurring after an Advance). However the IH does say that Background Packages do not count as Advances (page 26). That's all I've got, I'm afraid.

Spend XP are Spend XP.

If you learned enough, you advance to the next rank.
