Dominance Phase - No Standing Strength have Gold in pool

By AceManUSC, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

In a joust match, my opponent had no standing characters, but he had several gold coins in his gold pool. I had a few standing strength points, but he had more coins than I had strength. He says he wins. I thought you had to at least have one standing character to be considered in the competition to win dominance? Who is right?

From the rules book

At the beginning of the dominance phase, all
players count the total combined STR of all of
their standing characters, and add 1 to this total
for each gold token in their gold pool. The player
with the highest value wins dominance and immediately claims 1 power for his or her House.

I think you may be confusing it with winning a challenge.

You simply add up the strength of the standing characters and the amount of gold in your gold pool. So 0 (Str) + 4 (gold) beats 2 (Str) + 1 (gold), for example.
