Peers in Ascension

By Schwarzie, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

Hi there,

I looked over the peers some classes may take and found something strange. Its reasonable t have the Social group Peer Military and on the other Hand the organisation Peers Imperial Guard and Imperial Navy. Some chars might not get military, but only one of the more specialised groups. But what is the reasoning behind giving a Character Peer Military AND Peer Imperial Guard AND Peer Imperial Navy. Each for the same price. Where is the reason to take Imperial Guard and Imperial Navy in this case?

So far i was under the impression that Peers dont stack. Or is this simply a lack of thought while creating these classes?

Where does it say that Peers don't stack?

Yeah, like how there's also "Government" and "Administratum."

I would rather these rather broad skills put down to the Peer/Good Rep equivilant to Speak Language's tribal dialect (military deals with a single world's PDF and government for that specific world's power structure).

There is quite a lot of overlap between peer military and imperial guard/imperial navy however the overlap is not complete. In the games I have been in we have always handled it that if you are dealing with someone from the Imperial Guard then Peer Imperial Guard would apply but peer military might not be suitable to the old man siting in some office handling elements of logistics, peer academic might be more appropriate. Certain peers are more common than others. Military is very broad and will cover areas like mercenaries and PDF often as well.

As for where does it say peers don't stack I couldn't at a quick glance say they don't but mechanically it seems like a poor idea to let them stack as the bonuses can get out of hand quickly. For example lets say you have peer Imperial Guard, Military and Hivers and you are dealing with a guardsman from the Brontian Longknives, he is covered by all these peers so let them stack and it's a +30. Allow this and quickly you'll be getting people wanting to stack hatreds in the same way, which gets scarier faster... I have hatred criminal, psykers and mutants and instead of a +10 to hit the unsanctioned psyker I get a +30. Its a GMs call to interpret this but I don't think peers are intended to stack, especially in Ascension when they become much more useful.
