A few questions from a new player

By Theomnipotentsco, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hey! I just got done playing my first game and had a great time. I thought that I had a decent grasp of the game, however there were a few things that came up rules wise that I wasn't quite sure how to resolve. So, here they are:

1. The Deadly Keyword- There are 2 questions that I have with this keyword

a) The if the attacking side has more cards with the "Deadly" keyword, it says to destroy a character on the defending side when the combat resolves. It it truly just with it resolving, meaning you don't actually have to win the challenge? (Ex. The Core set Jamie Lannister is attacking as an intrigue challenge and loses against

b) Say a side has more Deadly cards in a Military Challenge and wins the challenge. Do I kill something on the defending side due to the Deadly Keyword, and then also kill something else for the Claim on the challenge? If so, can they assign the kill to who died to the deadly keyword because the Character is Moribund? Or would that have already resolved?

2.Cersi Lannister Core Set - With her ability in the dominance phase, can I choose a character that's already kneeling? I'm thinking so because it says to pay two gold to choose a character, not a standing character. If I choose a character that is already kneeling, does the line about it not standing during the standing phase still come into effect?

3. Tywin Lannister Core Set - With his ability to put 2 gold on him during the marshalling phase, does that gold come off during the taxation phase? My thinking right now is no, because it isn't in your gold pool.

4. Cost Reducers - Can you stack cost reduction abilities? For example, can I kneel Hall of Heroes and Western Fiefdom to make a Lannister Card a -3 gold cost?

5. During your setup phase, can you use a card like Queen Cersi's Chambers and attach it to your house card? Or is it something that you can't do during setup but can do at any other time?

Hi, welcome!

a) Yes, deadly work if you lose the challenge, too. The conditions are: attacking and more deadly characters.

b) Deadly is a passive ability and resolve in the step 4 of the framework action (see pages 19/20 of www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/agotlcg/news/updated%20faq/LCGFAQ_2_4_Low_res.pdf ). In this step the claim of the military challenge is already been "claimed". So if you defend with one character, you can choose him to satisfy the military claim, he will go in moribund state. In this case the deadly keyword lose is value because the character is already moribund, and there are no other target. If you defend two with two or more characters, you can choose the claim victim as target for the deadly claim, because although moribund, it still count as in play.

2) The text on Cersei also says: "Kneel that character if it is standing". I think it's preety clear, and your interpretation is correct. You can choose a kneeling charactrer, and the no-standing condition always apply.

3) You are again right.

4) Of course! The text says: "reduce the cost of the next Lanni character/card you play in this phase by X", it does not give a line time inside the phse, only that the next character playd during this phase will have the cost reduced. It does not matter how many player actions you take between the activation of the locations and the playing of the card, as long that any card that you play does not apply as target (for instance the fiefdom lower the cost of lanni cards, not character, so it reduce attachment and location too...).

5) Second assumption is right. During setup is not possible to play attachment (if they don't have the keyword setup). With cersei chamber you can still play it as a normal location, and if played after the setup can you liberally choose between attachment or location.

Welcome to this great game! These are good questions, all. Let me preface this by saying that for such a new player, you already have a good understanding of how many things work. If you haven't already done so, I'd advise you get the latest FAQ available from the Support section of this site and familiarize yourself with it. It might seem intimidating at first, but you'll get the hang of it. It is indespensable for understanding much of the finer detail of the game rules and structure. Maybe it would be best to get a few more games under your belt, collect any questions that come up, and then try to answer them from the FAQ or ask them on these boards here.

Now, onto the questions.

Yes, this is indeed how it works. Resolving Deadly is entirely independent of who actually wins the challenge.

Claim comes first. If, after claim is resolved, there are no more unkilled participating characters on the defender's side, no one is killed for Deadly. You can see this from the flow charts in the FAQ. Look at the overview over the Challenge phase on page 20. It tells us that in the Framework Action Window in which the challenge resolves, there are four framework events:

1. Determine winner of challenge
2. Challenge result is implemented
3. Reward for unopposed challenge is awarded
4. Renown is awarded

Satisfying Claim occurs in the 2nd of these events. Now, have a look at the flowchart for the Framework Action Window on page 18. It tells us that Passive Effects (and Deadly is treated as one such) are resolved after all Framework Events have resolved. Ergo: Claim comes before Deadly.

This means that, if you're attacked in a MIL challenge by an opponent who has more characters with the Deadly keyword than you, you can always defend with just one weenie, kill that one for claim, and Deadly will fizzle. That makes Deadly more useful in POW or INT challenges (although by no means useless in MIL).

Absolutely. It even says right on the card: "Kneel that character if it is standing". Note that the "...if it is standing" is only there for the sake of clarity. The effect would work exactly the same if it only said. "Kneel that character", for the reason you mentioned above.

That's exactly right. For the same reason, the Gold on Tywin doesn't count for Dominance, either.

Certainly. There's nothing to stop you.

You can not. It's in the FAQ, page 7:

(2.1) Card Effects in Setup
Cards revealed during setup do not trigger card
effects. This includes cards that contain the
text "When put into play" or "When played
from your hand." No actions may be taken
during the setup phase.

HTH.

notalso

If you defend with 2 characters and lose a 1-claim, Deadly military challenge, then choose one of the defenders for claim, you will be forced to choose the second defending character for Deadly.

@ktom: yep you are right, I misinterpreted the passage in the FAQ :

"Rules Exception
Although considered in play, a Moribund card
cannot be removed from play (or targeted to
be removed from play) again by any effect or
any attempt to pay a cost for the remainder of
the action window."

I've read it (and when I think about it now my interpretation really did not make any sense) only regarding the cost, not the targeting of an effect.

Thanks!

I've been a CCG player (Mainly Magic, but have dabbled in other games) for a good 15-16 years, so I think a lot of understanding came from that. I did read through the FAQ, however there are just some things that you have to actually try it out before you can really see if you understood what you read or not. I had planned on playing more than one game last night, however it was the first time playing for my friend and I (we just did 2 player out of the Core Box) so it was a lot of slogging through the rules. Next time should probably be faster and we'll probably try the other two decks (Baratheon and Stark).
