Uncertainties

By Dhobbry, in WFRP Rules Questions

Hello everyone. I don't write much here but I always lurk and absorb :)

But I have to ask some questions now.

1. If an action fails (i.e. produces no successes), I understand you don't put any recharge tokens on it. Right? But I can still opt to use boon effects from the card. Does that mean I have to use bane effects even though the action has failed? If I use the boon effects, I have to put the recharge tokens on the card, right?

2. If my character gains wounds that exceed his threshold, he falls unconscious and turns one wound face up. He survives. A rally step follows, during which another character performs first aid and brings me back within my wound threshold. Does my character regain consciousness immediately? If not, when?

Thanks!

ANSWER: If your action fails, you still have to recharge the card. Same for monsters.

ANSWER: You remain unconscious until enough wounds have been removed that you regain consciousness. If you've got a WT of 10 and you have 13 wounds, you've got to get to 10 or fewer wounds to wake up.

the rules on page 51 of the core rule book state that the recharge tokens are applied only on a success

as for the original question, don't the boons and banes usually apply only in the event of a success?

Excellent. I stand corrected. :)

But the errata (page 2) states "Banes and boons can still be triggered if the corresponding action fails". Thus the uncertainty.

I think a bit of common sense needs to be applied here. For example, if you fail at a melee action and there is an entry for 2 boons giving you +1 damage then you can't trigger that (as you didn't actually "hit"). However, if 2 boons give regain 1 fatigue then that doesn't rely on the attack hitting and that can be triggered.

I've just read the FAQ after writing the above and it states:

"Banes and boons can still be triggered if the corresponding action fails. In some cases (particularly on attack action cards) the boon effect modifies a successful action. In this case, triggering those boon effects will serve no purpose, and players are advised to spend their boons on other effects, which can include generic or improvised effects if approved by the GM.

For example, a boon effect that triggers “+2 damage” on an attack action would have no effect if the action itself failed. However, a boon effect that triggered “You may perform a free manoeuvre” could still be triggered and resolved even on a failed action."

So, make the call on a case-by-case basis... happy.gif

So if an action fails, and I choose to use a boon effect that makes sense (e.g. gain a free maneuver), the action card wouldn't have to recharge as it was not successful.... I think I'll still put recharge tokens on it if any effects from it are activated.

I recommend you to give a try rules as written, before making any house rules, but that's only my humble opinion gui%C3%B1o.gif

What I fear is that your Players wouldn't want to spend boons in such a case. And what about banes? Will you activate them and cause an action to recharge?

Cheers

yep, I saw a boon effect +1 critical on a failed roll. My player asked me how to rule it. I ruled on the fly that it was not logical to use it, but offers him 1 fortune dice on his next roll.
