American text of a french card ?

By Okami4, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello all !

I'm a french player of Descent, playing with a translated copy of the game.

Last night we came over a ruling problem with the item "Crystal de Tival" (the necklace giving you back 6hp and all fatigue token), as the card's french text is ambiguous.

If someone could give us the american text of the card i'm sure it would help us a lot in our next games !

Thanks a lot guys !

Okami

(there is a thread about this card on the french Descent forum, likely we aren't the first gaming group having issues with this translation)

Crystal of Tival
Other

"Discard after equipping at the start of your turn to recover 6 wounds and restore your fatigue to its maximum value."

Ok to use it we have to equip it at the start of the turn and discard it IMMEDIATELY after?

You can do it that way. Most people I've played with don't bother to equip it until they need to use it.

It could possibly be construed as meaning that you can use it any time during your turn after your free re-equip, but I think that "immediately" was probably the intention, yes.

Almost sounds like it was written on the assumption that you wouldn't bother to equip it until you needed to discard it since it gives no other bonus.

Ok I understand! But I think we can use it when we need to but it has to be at the start of a turn immediately after beeing equip! no?

Yes. You have to use it at the start of your turn during the "Equip/Re-equip" phase.

I always read it as discard after (equipping at the beginning of your turn), so I figured that anybody who had it equipped since the start of their turn could discard the item at any time to get their health back.

Now, I'm not so sure....

So did I, as could never understand why you wouldn't be able to use it on a turn where you had equipped it a few turns prior. I still allow my players to do that, even though it seems like it reads otherwise.

OK, there's at least 2 plausible ways to read this:

1. Discard (after equipping) at the start of your turn .

You're only allowed to use it at the start of your turn, and the "after equipping" part is there to let you know that you can't use it if it's in your backpack (it must be equipped to be used).

2. Discard after (equipping at the start of your turn).

You can use it at any time during your turn after your free re-equip. Thus, if you want to put another item into your newly-free "other" slot after using the crystal, you'll have to spend movement points or wait until your next turn. However, you don't have to use the crystal at the start of your turn, you could use it half-way through if you want.

In either case, I don't see any problem with equipping it and not using it, if you need to free up space in your backpack or something like that.

Hello guys !

Thanks for your answers.

So i see that the french text is the exact translation of the american card.

We were precisely arguing about the same question, when exactly could you use it ?

I think that if this item was mean to be usable anytime during your turn, it would simply be wrote "discard during your turn to replenish fatigue and heal 6 wounds" , as every item could be used only if equipped.

For an ingame explanation, i would say that as soon as the necklace close around your neck ("equipped"), the magic it contain is triggered

So imho if you want to stick close to the rules, you would chose 1.

But as many other aspects of the game, it's up to your gaming group to elect which rule about the crystal of Tival you will follow ^^

(and again, thanks for your answers and the text card quote)

Hm maybe the whole "after equipping at the start of your turn" part just means that you can't use it in the same round you found it but have to wait until your next turn?
