Post-GenCon ThronesTimes Issue Now Up!

By Twn2dn, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that The second issue of my Game of Thrones newsletter is now available here.

In this 6-page issue:

• 2011 Gen Con results, including the 10 overall rankings, most popular houses and agendas, and other statistics
• Strategy articles and “Dear Ktom” a section inspired by “Dear Abby”
• Guest interviews and an article by former World Champion John Bruno
• Upcoming events info
• And more!

Please let me know if you encounter any misspellings, grammatical errors, or any other problems related to the content or formatting. I had to rush this edition a bit, and may have missed something, but will post updates as I become aware of issues.

If you have any other comments or suggestions, or if you would be interested in writing for an upcoming issue, please post a comment below or on the issue download page!

Enjoy!

Also, apologies for the delay. I was originally planning to get this up a couple of weeks ago, and ideally would have spent another 1-2 hours polishing it, but work (and life) has become increasingly busy over the last month. I thought rather than wait and put this up in it's "perfect" form, it was better to post what I had.

Hopefully the next issue, which likely won't be until regionals (though I may do a 2-pager version after Stahleck and Black Friday) will be a bit better. Please do leave me any feedback you have!

Thanks!

Ex termly good paper. ;)

You can see a defiant improvement from the first version which was good in its self.

Page 4: It looks like Maester's Path was the most popular in melee, not the KotHH.

Well done! Very good looking, with access and information. Thanks!

@Rings: Thanks man, it's good to hear.

@Rogue: Thanks...I'll have to fix that.

I wanted to throw out a more general question to the readers. Which page(s) or section(s) is/are your favorite? This can be for either the first (post-regionals) issue or the issue just released.

Basically, I'm hoping to figure out what people love and where I can make improvements. In issues that are a bit shorter, I will also likely cut the "least favorite" sections rather than those enjoyed by more people. (For example, if I find out that people don't find the "Commentary" section very interesting, I can drop that and replace it with something better.)

I loved the commentary from some of the people at that final melee table.

Same, I know the others at that table could not have been happy to sit down to what the sat down to.

I quite liked the break down of what plots and agendas were getting used. The plot breakdown was in issue 1 it seems, the agenda breakdown in this issue. As a new player, it's nice to get some perspective on what's getting used, and maybe alert me to some cards I wouldn't've considered. For example, Winds of Winter is the fourth most common plot among your sample, after Valar, Retaliation, At the Gates, but the Winter agenda is less popular than five other agendas. I knew Winds was getting used outside seasonal decks, but now I can see just how popular it is as a strong 2-claim plot.

Keep up the great work.

I enjoyed the interviews. I enjoyed the discussion about the houses / agendas. I liked pretty much everything.

A few suggestions:

1. Use black house icons on the pie chart. The white ones don't come out very well. I know it's a minor thing, but I'm sure you want any and all feedback.

2. I'd like to see some metagame speculation going forward. What you expect to see in the next few tournaments, what you think will be dominant, etc. I like talking / reading about how the meta will be changing as people see the results of GenCon and also as new cards become legal (Baelor Blacktyde & Prince's Plans for example).

That's about all I can think of.

Really liked this issue!

My favorite portions (in no particular order):

  • Nate's interview
  • The Opinion -section
  • Comments from the final Melee -table

really nice issue. I actually downloaded it and saved it for future reference.

I nejoyed the Commentary from deathjester and Dobbler at the final melee table very much - I think a lot of us wnated to know what was going hrough their heads as that whole thing played out.

i got a lot fo sue out of the stats on what rsetricted Cards see play - after VB of course. MArtell being so popular, of course VB is going to be over represnetd, but I like gauging how popular teh Fury Plots are and note thta Narrow Escape seems well and truly nerfed. Only one of the top playrs in teh world even used it in his deck. Most of us won't.

Good stuff.

I too loved the statistical breakdown of house and card plays. Intrigued to see that in melee it's fairly close to even split, not perfect, but a lot closer than joust

There's a couple things that interested me about the melee/joust split. Targeryon was the least represented House in Joust but tied for the most in Melee. Lannister also flipped in the opposite direction although not as much. I'm a little curious as to why since the stats aren't really analyzed. Admittedly, I'm a fairly recent player so I may be missing something else.

Other than this small quibble, I did like the newsletter.

Thanks for this very fine effort you've made. I think it's outstanding. I just hope you'll get around to do a full issue on Stahleck and Black Friday. It's just so long until Regional Season.
