Not really, no. You basically are a team manager and you compete in 5 weeks (rounds) to win highlight reels from that week, thus scoring you fans and other things. When you play your cards, you do football things, like tackle and pass, but that's as far as it goes to playing actual football if that's what you were wondering.

The game is actually more about the highlights you might see summarized on ESPN. Winning a game of football has nothing to do with winning this game. It's all about pleasing your fans. Some teams have fans that just want to see you cause injuries (hockey, anyone?). And sometimes the fans just want to see how much cheating you can get away with. The football theme is strong here, but any actual knowledge of football is useless.
