2 Champs and a Chump - EP 36

By Dobbler, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Come listen as Zeiler, Will and Darryl review the Mask of the Archmaester Chapter pack.

You can find it here.

(Sorry Kennon, for some reason the episode isn't showing up on the feedburner yet, otherwise I would have linked to it there)

What the heck guys! You really need me there to provide some sensibility!

You put Archmaester Marwyn in the bottom 5???? Are you guys nuts?

What?!? They guy who can copy Valar (from EITHER plot pile) or whatever? I thought he was EASILY in the top 5, and was complaining at GenCon that he can hit either players plots (there is a reason that Valar was 1 per plot deck even when everyone could have 2 of each plot).

Sigh...now I am goign to have to listen.

Yeah, I hate critiquing my co-hosts, but they missed the boat on this one.

Oh wait, what am I talking about, I LOVE critiquing my co-hosts!

There's not only Valar, there's a bunch of effects that may come in handy. OTOH, he *is* a cost 4 neutral, and it'll be kinda difficult to time his dying right at times. Bottom Five seems kinda harsh, though. ~Where did they put Bloodrider, dead last?

I agree with Rings and Dobbs on Marwyn...easily top 5. Maybe I am in the minority but having plot actions copied and used again seems pretty powerful ***cough*** VALAR****cough**** lengua.gif .

it's not in iTunes :(

Ok, Darryl's water polo story about himself and Nate French was quite hilarious.

And instead of "props, slops and awesome stories", it should have been "props, slops and cops"

As a first time listener, I wasn't expecting the 2 Champs and a Chump to be T-Boz, Left-Eye and Chilli.

Now I'm going to go and start from the beginning with the other 35 Eps.

I am no world championship level player here but thing about it: You can copy any city plot, ANY city plot. you can copy Family Duty Honor, you can copy Valar, you can copy wildfire, you can copy counting favors or marched to the wall or fleeing to the wall. Does anyone else see the value of mid-challenges dropping another "Mutual X" effect? could change the entire phase.

Also, my ticket was for 60 in a 45.

Geez, you guys really needed me for this episode. I also think Darryl cussed 150 times. Possibly more often than he use the word "the".

You can't copy your own At The Gates with Archmaester Marwyn. Well...you can copy it, but you won't recieve the effect because At The Gates is a City plot in your used plot pile.

In regards to your Genna, Creylen combo, I also thought it would be cool to include out of house Osha on that. If you either have Osha, or a non kneeling character like the new Cersei, it could get crazy. They would basically never be able to win intrigue challenges as the defender against you, so with the agenda, its 2 cards a turn.

listening now and they put Bloodrider in the top 5

I think the event is on the table until it has finished resolving, and all responses/saves/cancels to it. So until you are done searching for the new card, To Be A Wolf is still on the table.

Yeah, the event would leave play at the 6th part of the action window, while the response happens at the 5th part of the action window.

The card you didn't talk about is Bran the Builder's Legacy. That with rickon = excellent OOH location. Imagine two scouting vessels in a stark deck across the table from you. IthinkImightcry.

I didn't mean to say that Marwyn will be useless, (you may recall that I was the one trying to dream up examples like Valar/At the Gates- even though I forgot it wouldn't work) and I've sure been wrong about things before (ie, Ghaston Grey) but I really think that Marwyn is going to fall in the camp of things like Jaqen H'gar and Old Bear Mormont. Really cool, powerful effects that catch people's eye but wind up being t0o cost intensive to be as popular and powerful as first glance would think.

Hey, if nothing else though, this is the first episode thread that's sparked this much discussion in quite awhile, so I consider that a win!

You only see his ability, but I see him as a 4 Str bicon with the Learned crest. He definitely can find a place in many a maester deck. If he should happen to die, well, then his ability is icing on the cake.

Sure, he's a usable character on his own, but if he's being used as essentially a 4g, 4STR, bicon with a crest that's otherwise blank, there's bound to be some other character with an applicable ability that will wind up being more efficient for the deck.

We should get Dobbler to weigh in. After hearing the podcast, he told us he was specifically going to run Marwyn in his deck for our tournament last night. Dobbler, how'd Marwyn's ability work for you? Swing any games, or was he just a 4/4 vanilla?

Um... I thought 1 of each plot was the rule (Power of... being exceptions)?

I believe there was a CCG agenda that let you play two copies of any plot.

Actually, what I think Rings is probably referring to is that there was a time when the game first launched that you could have two copies of any and every plot at all. So must plot decks wound up being 2 copies of 3 different plots and then 1 copy of something else. Valar was originally printed during the first year of the game, and thus had the restriction of one per deck that it still does today. Hurray for me playing this game for freaking ever, lol.

But really, sometimes I miss those days....

Never knew that. Interesting. I'm happy they changed that, though. Doesn't seem very appealing to me.

Just wanted to say this one was one of the most enjoyable episodes for some time.
