Is there any time where a you do not have to do a response on a card? Like if i attacked with killer of the wounded and reduced a opponents str do i have to stand them? and on that point it i do stand them does that remove them from the challenge?

Any card ability that is preceded by bold text indicating when it should be used ("Response:", "Any Phase:", "<name of phase>:") is always optional.
