Deathly and Walder Frey

By KyK, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Deadly
During a challenge, if the attacking player controls
the most participating characters with the
“Deadly” keyword, the defending player must
choose and kill a defending participating character
after the challenge resolves.

Walder Frey:
Lord, House Frey Deadly. After at least 1 defender is declared during a challenge, kneel Walder Frey to have him participate on the side that is currently winning the challenge.

Hi, i have a question about deadly and Walder Frey. Suppose i attack in a military challengue with strength 2 and i control Walder Frey. My opponent use in defense a character with str 3 and no deathly. I have to kneel Walder Frey as defender and my opponent wins the challengue (strenght 2 versus strenght 7). The defender control in this case no characters with deathly and the attacker 1 (Walder Frey because the controller is the attacker), so the defender must kill one defender. Can he kill Walder Frey because he is a defender or he must choose and kill a defender character he/she controls? I don't know if you must satisfy the deathly with your own characters or in this case you can choose Walder Frey

Thanks for the answers.

The only limitation on choosing the character that dies for Deadly is that it is participating as a defender. It doesn't say anything about having to be controlled by the defending player. Walder can be chosen to die for Deadly if he jumps in as a defender, even if his controller is not the defending player.

In the spanish rules (translated) says: "the defending player must choose and kill one of his defending participating character
after the challenge resolves". That's the reason i asked that question.

Thx for the answer again.

So the Late Lord Frey's own Deadliness comes back to be his undoing, in this situation.

That, my friends, is karma in action :D

Sounds very silly, but in a Lanni deck with the Joffrey who gains a power when a Lord or Lady in play dies... this could be a great way of taking that final power for the victory!

In case you're curious, here is what the English rule book says. It doesn't say that the defending player must control the character chosen to die:

During a challenge, if the attacking player con- trols the most participating characters with the “Deadly” keyword, the defending player must choose and kill a defending participating charac- ter after the challenge resolves.

By the way, this is nice to know about Walder Frey and Deadly. I never play with him, so I had never realized that he never changes control and that Deadly counts participating characters by controller. I had been thinking that Deadly counted attacking Deadly characters vs. defending Deadly characters.
