starship weapon slots

By Ki_Ryn, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

How much flexibiltiy is there in weapon slots on a hull? In the core book there are two frigates and each has 2 dorsal slots, but then there is an example craft with 1 prow and 1 dorsal (and then Battlefleet Koronus has a frigate with 2 dorsal and 2 prow!). Is there some general rule (even a rule of thumb) about what sort and number of slots given ships types have?

Can these slots be changed? For example could a light cruiser replace it's port and starboard slots with dorsal slots instead? If a given ship can't do that, is it reasonable to assume that there is a light cruiser class out there somewhere that is designed with dorsal slots from the start?

To answer your question, there are no official rules to transform the weapon slots on a ship. The Sabre described in the Core Rulebook is a different Hull : ie, frigates avalaible on page 195 are Sword & tempest ; the Sabre is a Firestorm.

If you want to create a new light cruiser hull with dorsal slots, just go ahead !

Do you mean the falchion-class frigate? It has only 1 prow slot and that slot is already filled with torpedo tube that cannot be removed.

Creating your own ship with different weapons seems possible. Although balancing it out properly would be tough. I haven't looked at the numbers closely enough but there seems to be a strange amount of variance between different ships as is. I'm guessing it is either because of weighting issues or simply the designers making things that feel like they are in the proper range over all. The first can be accounted for with enough examples but the second.. not so much.

right, I was thinking of the Falchion but mistyped myself. It has 2 dorsal and the prow tubes, which is still a new (and stronger) weapon configuration than what is in the core books.
