What's the deal with the CCG in the LCG world?

By Corinos, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Hi all,

I'm a new player, bought me a Core set, love it, and see that there is still CCG materials around. I've heard that the Five Kings Edition starter is good to have, but in general, should I be grabbing the old cards, or should I be ordering the chapter packs for the new format? The old ones are still mostly legal, is my understanding, so should I be buying old boosters?

LCG cards are the only cards legal for standard competitive play. In addition, many people (even those who do not compete in tournaments) play with LCG cards only...probably because it is what is currently "supported" by the company, but also in part because everyone has equal access to these cards without rare-chasing or hunting for discontinued product.

Nevertheless, CCG cards work just fine with LCG cards. There are, of course, some CCG cards that are incredibly powerful/overpowered in melee (multiplayer) because they weren't balanced with melee in mind.

If you don't know what to buy, I would stick with LCG cards. If you've already got those, or find a bunch of CCG cards on the cheap, and your friends don't mind if you use old cards, then CCG is a good (second) option.

So the cards being printed in the LCG are all new cards, and there won't be reprints of the old ones that are lcg legal?

Some of teh old crads to egt reprinted - but some of those repritnms have slightly different charcteristics or abilities - making them illegal for roganized play.

Thus - you are better off just buying LCG product (Core sets, Chapter PAcks, Hosue boxes) than getting old CCG stuff.

Thanks for the Advice! I appreciate it. I've only bought 4 boosters from The Five Kings edition, so I'll get LCG stuff from here on out.

... and, less immediately game-winning but still pretty silly, furthermore:

Stranglehold (Event)

Marshalling: Zap all of your opponents' hands, further annoy them by causing them to lose a power token each, then gurgle with delight as you draw three cards as a reward. Cost; feck all.

In an LCG melee it would be (barring maybe The Prince's Plans) the best card-draw event in the game, but with the added bonus of giving you a free volley of Besieged Shipyard triggers and a weak Waste Their Time effect into the bargain... and, to stress this, it would be completely free (the only cost being; "have less characters than two or more opponents to get my full effect... i,e. marshall third").

That card is ridiculous in melee. We'll probably see it reprinted in the Lanni box.
