Maester's Path and end of time

By thorin_81, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Let's say that I'm playing a maester's path deck and at a certain point my opponent managed to kill all my maesters character and I have no more Apprentice Collar.

I still have 2 chains attached to the agenda. The game continues and I accumulate 1000 powers on my house card (off course it's a fantasy scenario), but the 50 minutes for the round ended (my opponent was not able to gain 15 points).

Can I win the game because I have 1000 powers on my house card and my opponent less than 15?

I think I can't win, because the agenda says so. And a victory by counting powers after time expires is still a victory, so I think I can't be declared the winner in any case.

But I want to be sure.

At time limit, if no one has reached their victory condition, the person closest to their necessary power total is awarded a modified win.

Hmmm, is "closest" the right word in thorin's case? Who is closer, the player 15 points under his total or the player 1000 points over it?

A player that cannot win is never close to the victory condition IMO.

In game context, where (once other victory conditions are taken out), the only thing that matters is "15 or greater," 1000 is closer. This is because the rules do not say "the player closest to 15 power" gets the modified win, but rather "the player closest to their victory total" gets the modified win. By substituting the concept of "victory total" for the absolute number 15, you have to include the concept that no matter how much farther "greater than 15" is from the number 15 in absolute terms, it is considered closer to the "victory total" by surpassing it.

And contrary to what seems to be the popular concept, a modified win does not (and should not) carry the same weight as a full win int tournament placement.

Let's say my opponent has Melisandre (CS) out and a total of 7 power. I have 4 power on my House and 4 power on one of my characters. Do I get a modified victory when the time's up?

No, because the 4 power on your character isn't counting to your win condition.
