Workable Targ Army

By Skowza, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

Has anyone had any success with Targ Army builds? A semi-usable deck I've been trying recently based on a jumble of ideas I've been kicking around for a while...

Heir to the Iron Throne

Plots
A Song of Summer
Take Them by Surprise
Retaliation!
2x The Power of Arms
Valar Morghulis
Focused Offense

Characters (29)
3x Jorah's Cohorts
3x Fairweather Followers
1x Randyl Tarly
2x Horseback Archers
3x Carrion Bird
3x Daemon Blackfyre
3x Jhogo (BwB)
1x Queen Daenerys's Horde
3x Dragon Thief
1x Viserys (KotS)
3x Disgruntled Mercenary
3x Pike Phalanx

Events (7)
3x Narrow Escape
2x Make an Example
2x The Price of War

Locations (19)
2x Xaro's Home
3x Eastern Fiefdoms
2x Lady Daenerys's Chambers
1x Street of Steel
3x Summer Sea
3x Kingsroad Fiefdom
3x Bay of Ice
1x Plaza of Purification
1x River Row

Attachments (6)
3x Unburnt
3x Bones of a Child

The idea is to win Initiative and get a consistently high claim going as soon as possible. I can use Unburnt and Bones to keep my guys on the board and keep cards in my hand until I get the engine going, at which point I just overrun. The Mercenaries bounce back to my hand every turn, which allows me to recurse Unburnt over and over and I can use it for draw off of Xaro's; they are also a consistent partner for the Pike Phalanx until Daemon comes out. Focused Offense works great since I can just discard Bones or use Carrion Birds and Archers for claim. I think I need to add more Plazas since the value of KR Fiefdoms increases greatly once I have Plaza out.

i would include more than 1 copy of Plaza of Purification considering how important it will be to paying for armies

also you might want to consider Training grounds to make your armies not kneel for military attacks

I couldn't figure out how to fit TG in; I'm beginning to think I'd rather use High Ground instead since it costs less and drawing into more than 1 of them would be useful, unlike TG. Thanks for the suggestion.

I would recomend trying a dothraki build. It's my favorite deck to play and I went 3-3 with it at GenCon.

Use the KotHH agenda to give you +2 influence, which is all you need to ambush in everything (except dragons, but you probably won't have them in a dothraki deck) Aggo's Bow, Jhogo's Whip when used with flaming pitch tower is most effective combo. Once they have declared defenders, abush in the bow or the whip to kill or remove their best defender, guaranteeing you to win by > 4, giving you a selected kill. I have found that even if I can't pull off pushing a challenge through, my opponent will be worried about ambush shenanigians and will let them go through.

Even though the weapons are unique, they go to the discard pile, meaning you can play them 3 times so you don't have to wait for Aggo to come out to play his bow so you can go ahead and play on any dothraki. Add Lady Deneary's Chambers and you will be able to take them right back from the discard pile. Also, unlike the Dragons, not all the Dothraki have to take part in the challenge for you to use the response of Rakharo (discard from opponents hand) or Aggo (move power from loser's house to your own) so you can save them for power challenges.

The only non-dothraki I run are +1 to all Targ Dany and Pyat Pree. If you are facing another deck focused on military and power and very little intrigue built in you will still be able to get some selected kills. I prefer the search Drogo to help make up for the low draw and when you opponent valars, you can ensure getting some characters in your hand.

Here are the plots I run, I almost always win initiative (so add some Bay of Ice to help with card draw) and have plenty of gold.

(4 3 1)Loyalty Money Can Buy (normal opener)

(5 7 1)Fury of the Dragon

(5 11 1)Take Them by Surprise

(4 5 1)Rains of Autumn - Can't hurt you

(3 0 1)Snowed Under - for maesters

(2 6 1)Storm of Swords

Thanks for the feedback! I have a Dothraki deck that runs relatively smoothly but I wanted something different featuring the Army support they are adding for Targ. My Dothraki deck does use the Weapon attachments and also Rusted Swords for the Ambush-like ability and to bump KD's STR before he dies...

My plots are a little different, I run NE as my restricted card instead of Fury (its great to kill "search" Khal Drogo then NE him back right away) so I think I'm currently using: Wildfire (I can choose not to save Khal even if I have 3 or less characters), Storm of Swords, Loyalty Money Can Buy, Song of Summer, Retaliation, Muster the Realm, and Battle of Oxcross. Focused Offense is also side-barred as I am still undecided on it. I rely mostly on 3x Jhogo and Vaes Dothrak for draw; the problem I have with the Dothraki decks is that so many of their effects rely on winning a M challenge while attacking , and I would rather play that style of deck out of Stark where it belongs.
