agency/miskatonic investigator rush

By kamacausey, in Call of Cthulhu Deck Construction

ok guys i got lots of decks and ideas running through my head. im sure these have all done before at one time or another but its all new to me. this time its an agency/miskatonic investigator rush deck based around bringing investigators in cheaper via the antropology advisor. is there any hope for a deck like this? here is what i have thought of off the top of my head:

character wise:

undercover security

blackwood file clerk

steve clarney

marshal greene

local sheriff

anthropology advisor

visiting author

chess prodigy

obscure linguist

event:

unearthing the ancients

binding

dr carsons treatment

a small price to pay

shotgun blast

catastrophic explosion

come on people! surely this deck has been done before. what am i missing? surely you have something to chime in with professor. arent you a big fan of investigators? im sure you got an investigator deck sitting around somewhere...

I never ran a deck like this. My buddy did and he chose to go with Investigator/Dreamer for the Dream Dagger. That was a TOUGH deck to beat and I almost took it to worlds last year...

I played a deck like this for a bit actually. I honestly didn't find binding very useful. Maybe it's just the types of decks I played against, but with Chess Prodigy I ended up not using it very often.

I would take a look at the Mad Genius + A Small Price to Pay combo. It's very good in this deck for some easy tokens. Also, Torch the Joint might be good if you're up against something like Seventy Steps.

I don't like unearthing the ancients. I prefer to use characters like Student Archaelogist, Natural Philosopher, and/or Ali Kafour.

And Obsessive Insomniac is probably the best Miskatonic character right now.

whats wrong with paying 3 to get 3 cards? also, what characters/events/support would you consider for this type of deck?

Generally the problem with Uneathing Ancients is that it sucks up your big domain. Normally you use your big domain to play cards impact the field. Otherwise you may find yourself a step behind of where you need to be later in the game. UA is great card economy, but it only serves to hep you later unless its really later in the game.

Most Miskatonic decks don't like playing that late into a game as their little characters usually can't stand up against the other factions. So big cards need to be played wisely and not waste your time getting a win before your opponent can stabilize. More often than not, this means you don't have the time to drain your big domain to simply draw a few cards you might not even get the chance to use.

Yup, what Magnus said. As for card draw, I like Obsessive Insomniac, Focused Art Student, Student Archaelogist, Natural Philosopher, and Rabbit's Foot.

student archaelogist and and natural philospoher arent card draw. they are card filtering. obssesive insomniac and rabbits foot have the potential to be consisent card draw though. scientific text seems to be decent too. how come no one likes it?

I Iike scientific text as well. And for Student Archaelogist and Natural Philosopher, true they aren't explicitly card draw, but you do end up +1 card advantage to your opponent, so it has the sense of draw.

alright magnus and professor, im curious to know how yall would construct this deck. what cards that i listed would yall play? what would yall ditch? and most importantly what would you add thats not already on the list?

I'd get rid of Steve Clarney, Local Sheriff and Unearthing the Ancients. (I'm torn about Steve - he is interesting, and if he were Miskatonic, like he was supposed to be! I would feel better about him).

Then I would add Obsessive Insomniac, Dr. Carson (to help with Small Price), and an Agency Card - maybe Informant?

Probably not Informant - I would go with Blackwood File Clerk perhaps because she is an Investigator and could come out for 1 or 0 if you have Anthropology Advisor in place.

ok what about the abilities? what should definitely be in there? what should go? im thinking that shotgun blast and a small price to pay are definants. is binding worth it? what about dr carsons treatment? here is an updated list:

3 anthropology advisor

3 chess prodigy

3 natural philosopher

3 student archaelogist

3 professional counselor

3 obssessive insomniac

3 blackwood file clerk

3 undercover security

3 obscure linguist

3 *dr carson

2 *marshal greene

2 *steve clarney

2 *dr ali kofur

2 *randolph carter

3 a small price to pay

3 shotgun blast

3 scientific text

3 rabbits foot

i decided to cut visiting author last minute. should i play him over someone else?

No Bindings, huh? Well, I think the best advice I can give you is to try out your deck, and see where it is strong and weak. Then tweak it a bit. See if there is something you feel is missing.

If you are planning a "rush" deck, then you want to have lots of characters out quickly and run to stories as fast as possible. You might find your more expensive characters (cost 3 or higher who are not Investigators) might not get enough play.

should i be playing bindings? what are the miskatonic staples?

I like Binding, but you really have to play some games and see if you feel like it should be there. Don't spend too much time theorizing - get some playing in!

i tried a mono miskatonic deck last night and it was...lackluster... granted i didnt have all the cards i needed like obsessive insomniac and focused art student but it was still lacking the umph it needed to get it done at the stories. here is what i played:

characters: 29

3 anthropology advisor

3 visiting author

3 chess prodigy

3 natural philosopher

3 student archaeologist

3 mad genius

3 dr carson

3 laboratory assistant

3 dr ali kofur

2 professor nathaniel peaslee

support: 15

3 atwood science hall

3 parallel universe

3 open for inspection

3 scientific text

3 rabbits foot

event: 6

3 beneath the surface

3 binding

some things i noticed about the deck was beneath the surface wasnt good enough. it costs too much. this deck doesnt want to be paying 4 for an event that may or may not go your way. scientific text and rabbits foot were good sources of draw but im not so sure if they are good enough because once the character that has it on goes insane you lose it. atwood science hall was meh. parallel universe was ok. not bad but not overly impressive. i actually like open for inspection more then i thought i would and it was the only reason why i was able to win the one game i won last night. binding is a solid card. nice battle trick and really the only pseudo removal the miskatonic have at their disposal. after playing i think the miskatonic need some help from the agency for removal and investigators with willpower. sound off with any ideas or suggestions below.

This Rush deck has worked well for me (slight change from the Regional version becasue of Catastrophic Explosion and coming of Legacy AP's):

x3 Clover Club Bouncer
x3 Clover Club Torch Singer
x3 Expendable Muscle
x3 Triggerman
x3 Clover Club Executive

x3 Intimidate
x3 Kidnapping 101
x3 Low Blow
x3 Panic

x3 Bound and Gagged
x3 Gun Runner's Club
x2 Dutch Courage

Silver Twilight (15)

x3 Lodge Barkeep
x3 Protector of Secrets
x3 Lodge Housekeeper
x3 Lord Jeffrey Farrington
x3 High Wizard of the Order

Worth Mentioning: I am also currently playing around with The Seventh House on the Left and William Bain from Kingsport Dreams. Clover Club Executive is out but I am on the fence about the other card to take out. Protector of Secrets out is my next experiment. It will be interesting to see if 12 cards will be enough of a sprinkle to make ST still playable in the deck. Also, Syndicate will be getting a magnificent 3 cost Character in the next AP that will make it interesting to try them mono.

With Syndicate you need to let go of everything having to do with winning by board position and just sleaze that 3rd story before your opponent has time to dominate you. Talking archetypes, just think Rogue!
