Like to clarify if a player were to do a power challenge on me, and I played burning the sand. I understand no one will will the challenge but will the attacker still gain unopposed power?

no, remeber that in order to gain the power for unopposed challenge you have to win thata challenge.
Burning on the sand let no one win the challenge, so claiming power for unopposed is not possible since no one wins.

Right, what thorin_81 said. Burning on the Sand causes the challenge to resolve with no winner, so no claim, no winning the challenge and no gaining power from renown.
