While I'm not panicked... since I have my towel. NYC/DC/Nor. VA Players... post when you can.

I'm sitting up in Boston waiting for the storm, so post here if you can since... the weather channel has this thing pegged like the '38 Hurricane.

(Never mind the category difference and lack of warning, and lack of hurricane barriers... )

As of right now its still fairly calm up here, just a little rain. How bad is it down there? Anything like Bob or Gloria? (I remember both... was outside for most of Bob and Gloria I remember watching the trees get pulled up.

It didn't hit the west side of Brooklyn as hard as I (and I think others) was expecting. Hopefully it's pretty mild up in Boston as well.

It looks like after hitting Long Island it slowed down a lot. It's a tropical storm now, so hopefully it won't hit Boston that bad.

I think there was one downed tree... but otherwise I nothing. There wasn't any point where you couldn't go outside.

We survived it quite well here in DC. Alexandria has flooded worse from spring thunderstorms than this hurricane. My old block in DC did have a large tree fall over into the street and smash a volvo, dent a couple cars on the other side of the street, and I think did minor damage to a house on the opposite side of the street too.

All good here on long Isladn. I never lost power, adn she was only a tropicla Storm when she amde landfall - could have been much worse. Some pretty impressiver storm sugres on the South shore, but I'm in the center of the Island - so we really dodged a bullet.

I hoep folks don't get complacent. New Yorkers: that wasn't a hurricane when it hit us. .

Just curious, since I knew this would be WAY overhyped (~like anything on the East Coast, where the sun sets and rises according to East Coast people). gui%C3%B1o.gif

When is the last time a hurricane actually hit NYC? You would think that would be as big of a historical deal as the San Fran earthquakes.

Seriously though, glad everyone here made it without many issues. And glad the Midwest floods of 2011 did about 10X more damage and got 10 times less coverage. lengua.gif

It was the first time since 1903 that a hurricane made landfall in the Jersey Shore.

Flooding of some of the local rivers was the worst it had been since the 1860's

I pre-emptively apologize. A ton of people were affected to be sure, and it was somewhat historic (which is what I thought).

Again, we have a 200-year flood (although some of it was man-made due to damns and the Corps of Engineers) and I know a TON of people who have lost their home, and two that basically lost their town - and you never hear of it. But that has nothing to do with any suffering on the East Coast and I know it. Sorry!

1938 was the last bad hurricnae to hti teh region. It was a CAt 3 and we only get them around here every 80-100 years or so. But statitsically: they DO hti at baout that arte. And when teh enxt one hits - its goign to rival Katrina in property damage and insurance payouts. THAT'S why they ype these stomrs in NY - there are millions of people at risk and they can't hype it enough. Like I said above - the thing I worry most about is New Yorkers being complacent when the big one finally does arrive

Taht being said - the south shore of the Isladn did take a serious punhc from Irene.

almost 300,000 people still dont have power

i live in Wantagh and wont have power for a week, 3 houses that i can see are destroyed by trees falling into them, quite a lot of root damage to roads when they fall and tons of houses flooded in freeport

screw irene

It will be inexcusable if LIPA doesn't have most of the Isladn online back by tomorrow. 72 hours is plenty of time to reapir the dmaage form a tropicla storm. Imagine if she had been a real hurricane?

That does suck Jack. Hang in there - hopefully it own't be oo much longer. I'll never forget being wihtout power for a week after Gloria in 1985, so I am counting my blessings here.

Lets See...

This tropical storm has set about half of RI without power... a bunch of flooding and tree damage.

For RI:

'38 (Cat 3) Hurricane is the big one, Providence you can still see the 14ft water levels on the old buildings. My Grandfather was trapped that day... and another anecdote from that was this narrow street downtown by the Arcade (America's first "Mall" c.1880s) some glass shattered and the winds took the pieces and slit a woman's throat. Pretty much anything in the low-lying areas around the bay were just gone. This is our legendary hurricane.

'54 Hurricane Carol (Cat 3): Again went right up the bay and flooded Providence. 460 million (6.5 billion today) and 65 deaths.

'86 Hurricane Gloria: not nearly as bad since we had a hurricane barrier put in Providence after Carol hit. I do remember lack of power, and lots of trees went down. The coastal areas got hit badly IIRC.

'91 Hurricane Bob: This one smashed us pretty good... not high on death count compared to '54 and '38. But thats also because unlike the other two... people had advance notice and prepared. Power outage, trees, power lines, charleston and middletown were washed off. OTOH I was outside for most of the storm having fun at trying to walk in the wind.
