2 Champs and a Chump- Episode 35

By Kennon, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Alrighty, I think Greg's busy today, so it looks like I'm posting the link. Aren't you all happy? Yay! Here you go, guys. Go hit the feed here for all of our good GenCon joust discussion.

And further thoughts that I've had since recording if anyone cares: I really should have gone further on the Summer and traitor themes with my deck. I didn't run up against a deck all day that my traitors would have been dead to me against and after seeing Maester of the Sun in action again, I really should have had him in for even more claim soak and another option to kneel for Ill-Tidings.

A gold for summer helps get around the OOH for Widow's Watch.
I know a lot of poeple fancy the 1x of each unique, but why only one of Stoneheart? I find at 1x I don't always pull into her when I need to and having power on your house is such a problem when you don't draw into her. I guess you could Summoning into her, I just assume thats a standard turn 1 for Beric of Mad Huntsman.

Also, have you considered running Brotherhood out of Stark? I find it a really fun build option using the Frozen Outposts (or Frozen Moats) to get Beric into multiple challenges/turn before you flip Prince that was Promised for the clincher. It lets you in house Widow's Watch, and you can trollery with Old Nan/Blackfish to rack up Fishy to 3 power by making him Brotherhood, then next turn make Beric a Tully to go non-kneeling on the offense. I don't know if it would have the same kind of consistency as Martell and Game of Cyvasse - I find the outposts moot against any scouting vessel on the board.

Overall, it looks pretty solid to me. No field spikes though? Cummon... its field spikes!

I wound up just going with one copy of Stoneheart because I haven't seen people playing Eastwatch-by-the-Sea in quite some time. In fact, I'm not sure I've seen anyone play it that wasn't specifically teching against Brotherhood, and I just didn't expect people to go that route at GenCon. I figured they were far more likely to go the return to hand route. I did, however, want to include at least a copy of her so that I had an out just in case I was surprised. Since she returns to play after death with no discernible penalty for me, I didn't feel as much of a need to include a duplicate for Widow's Watch to search out for a save. So between those two reasons and an overall need to try to get the deck as close to 60 as possible, I wound up with only 1 copy.

No, I hadn't thought of Brotherhood out of Stark before. Those are some pretty nifty trait based shenanigans there. It actually makes me wonder if there's anything intersesting to do with Brotherhood out of Lannister with Lion's Gate changing any of your own traits that you need. Daenerys out of house is a good starting point, but does anyone else have any ideas?

Raius from the Czech Republic played a beautiful Lanni Brotherhood deck with Lion's Gate and Dragons Dany, Old Nan and Horn of Dragons OOH at the Austrian Nationals this weekend and finished 3rd. I'll ask him if he'll share the decklist. I managed to get a modified win against him in swiss with my Martell KotHH deck with Prince's Plans. My deck just had the answers to his. Beric got hit by a Cyvasse while Snowed Under was revealed, and then I had the Viper and Ghaston Grey on the table and played Ping Pong with him. I must've discarded way more than 20 power from Beric all in all. But still, the deck was very good and really creative.

Turn Beric into a clansman, and then he can defend mil challenges while knelt and attack on military challenges while knelt? He will already have stealth from devious intentions. Nom sayin?

I had a good Lanni build as well, but I just couldn't stay away from the 'draw three' Martell character! :)

If anyone's interested, Raius posted his Lanni-Brotherhood-Trait Manip-deck on Agotcards:

Probably my favorite episode. Well done, and great to hear everyone's responses from 0-2 drop to Champion. I had forgotten Z was a 16 seed...if I had one more minute in my game and won it non-timed I would have knocked him out (me being 18th with a timed win). And that would have sucked since I would have gotten owned, and he had a great chance to win. Congrats again!

Jonathan Benton better watch out though...he has some admirers in Missou..if I were him I would shave that beard before visiting.

This was your favorite episode? Really? Jeez, we were all nearly asleep when we recorded it. I guess we need to follow that formula

Mainly subject matter. You guys stayed on topic more than usual (not that I mind the other stuff, usually I really like it - it just seemed to be chock full of good info and I love TR's). It showed experiences of different records and decks. *shrug*

Excellent episode gentlemen; I love the escalating drama of the tourney reports, all of which contained an impressive amount of detail.

My favorite quotations:

"This my tournament report, not Darryl's lying report." - Greg

"Oh women go crazy for Jon Benton." - Darryl, very offhandedly

By the way, I finally caved in. You can now count me among the listeners of your fabulous podcast. I started with the three GenCon episodes, and boy, what a fine job you're doing with this. I enjoyed myself immensely, and am looking forward to many more hours of 2C1C goodness.

I'm just starting to play this game, but already loving the podcast!

Huzzah! The more the merrier!
