It's Speculation Time!

By Walk, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

So, as revealed by the Arkham Nights news item, another expansion lies on the horizon. I'll admit it: I doubted that they would continue, since Miskatonic seemed so much like a final, all-inclusive expansion. But I was proven wrong! And so, we must baselessly speculate on what the expansion will include, for that is the way of the forums. Possibly. I don't know, feel free to speculate if you want.

My contribution: up until Miskatonic, everything was pretty formulaic. You had big boxes, which each had a new board, new mechanics, and a whole bunch of new investigators and AOs, ad you had small boxes, which had a herald and a new mechanic, with both varieties having many cards of various kinds. But Miskatonic bucked the traditional trend for big boxes, with no investigatoes, AOs, or board (not to imply it was a disappointment in any sense of the word). I believe we'll see some more major mix-ups in the formula. Specifically, we will see a steering away from certain game mechanics. With Miskatonic, the designers seemed to think that we had enough AOs, investigators, and boards, and so focused on other areas. Now, I suspect the designers will think that we have enough Location, Gate, and Mythos cards and not include any of those (the first expansion not to do so). Instead, they will focus on something different. My guess is a whole bunch of new Guardians, Heralds, and Institutions, as well as at least one new card deck. Or that's what I'd want, anyway...

Cursed items! I want cursed items!

New Ancient Ones! Especially for the 99.9% of AH players who couldn't get them at Arkham Nights...

Well if you want to wildy speculate about a "new" type of expansion, might I suggest a spin off! Something that used the base game board in some new way. Perhaps play the role of an Evil Cult trying to awaken the Ancient One?

First of all I would rule this out straight away, on the basis that this would need to be a 'big box' in order to contain all of the necessary pieces/cards. The 'pattern' suggests the next expansion will be small box.

Perhaps the next expansion with be: Arkham Horror: The Fabled FAQ? Oh wait, that would need a big box too!

Where does it say there will be a new Arkham Horror expansion? The only mention of an expansion is the Mansions of Madness one. And the line "You’ll also discover unrevealed secrets as we preview upcoming releases for the Lovecraft mythos," could mean anything.

Given the depth to which Miskatonic tried to address dilution etc, I'm hoping that any new expansion will add items integrate will without fear begin diluted. It's not difficult, consider what's already been done:

  • personal stories
  • relationships
  • lurker gates
  • injury/madness.

So, trying to think outside of the box, things that come to mind are:

  • Add a unique mechanic per Other world - so instead of moving from one space to another you trigger this mechanic. For instance, create a dreamland artifacts deck that you could draw an item from while in the Dreamlands instead of moving.
  • play with the basic game by adding a new mechanic. For example, have a non player controlled character with a limited set of actions (hmm... deputy dingby: he tries to hunt down monsters, but will also move to a player and attack them!)
  • add more ancient ones with epic battle cards & associated heralds
  • new investigators (complete with necessary personal stories)

Instead of focusing out, I could absolutely see a focus inward...greater concentration on each of the neighborhoods. I'm sure FFG could get quite a bit of mileage covering new territory for the French Hill with its eldritch-cursed Witch House, and the curious visitors who come at all hours of the night to the Silver Twilight Lodge...

Where are you guys getting this idea? The only mention in the event entry of a new expansion is one for Mansions of Madness .

In fact, Walk, an admin changed your comments in the Arkham Nights section to clarify that it is a Mansions expansion.

Sorry guys.

Sorry guys.

But why should we let facts get in the way of wild speculation?

You shouldn't.

I want new Investigators and Ancient Ones. Package them with the new FAQ. After, of course, I've seen it and ironed out any wrinkles.

I want "fixed" versions of all the investigators and AOs with boo-boos or things that could have been better addressed on them:

Wilson Richards
Daisy Walker
Wendy Adams
Patrice Hathaway
Tulzscha
Bast
Herbert West
Terrible Old Man
Call Ancient One
Rhan-Tegoth
Revised Cthulhu
Daoloth
Bureau of Investigations

I want updated base-game AOs in general.

And a Yig expansion.

And a pony.

And a Hard Boiled Egg.

*honk*

Make that Two Hard Boiled Eggs. :P

I'd like to see things that interact with specific Other Worlds - more than just drawing from the Other Worlds in encounter cards - like Rice suggested. I'd also want more Dual Color cards. Let's run into Yig, Y'Golonac, Tsathhoggua, and Quachil Uttaus!

And more Dust cards.

I'm with Tibs. I want a pony. And a badass cowboy hat. And a red rider bb gun with Yithian modifications.

The next expansion features includes a stick, but you must attach the moon yourself...

Seriously though, if FFG doesn't publish this material online (they didn't with Daoloth and Nuthulhu) can someone scan them and make them available to the community.

Whaaaat....? Hm. Looking back, it does indeed say Mansions. It's possible I misread it initially, but my memory seems to be that it used to say "Arkham expansion." I interpreted this to mean, well, Arkham, but elsewhere, FFG does seem to use the word to refer to all its Lovecraft lines. Perhaps the same admin who edited my comment changed "Arkham expansion" to "Mansions expansion."

Or I just misread it. Sorry, everyone. My mistake. Feel free to continue speculating, if you wish (it will now be entirely baseless).

THIS. One serpenty Scenario isn't enough. I want scales falling out of my decks!

And an Ithaqua expansion: this could virtually bring the Mountains of Madness to Arkham. Mmmmm...New England in winter...

After that, I could tolerate FFG quitting. But since this is a wish list, I would also love expansions devoted to the Dunwich Four: Shudde M'ell, Glaaki, Tsathoggua, and Abhoth.

That goes without saying ;'D

Unfortunately, Julia has all the ponies, and she is on vacation.

I'd like to see a big box that flips the game-play 180 degrees:

You play Mythos characters - Evil PCs whose goal it is to Summon the Ancient Old One

The Ancient Old one needs to collect Doom Tokens through his agents. In each location you can perform tasks (i.e. discard a Unique Item and a defeated hero trophy to summon a monster from the monster cup) that will aid him in his quest by:

  • Spreading Horror
  • Defeating Heroes (aka "Good" Monsters)
  • Summoning Monsters
  • Opening Gates

There would be a Hero deck to replace the Mythos Deck that closes gates, defeats monsters, and removes doom tokens.

In Other Planes you could recruit aid from the powers that be and gain horrible new abilities.

And a set of rules that allow for a PVP style play in which the players can go head-to-head as Heroes vs Villains.

Then you can have a series of small-boxes that allow you do the same style of play with the other "___ Horror" sets

Did anybody post last year's?

jgt, remember when FFG posted that cryptic short story snippet about the onset of a tide of snakes, and we all thought it was going to be the announcement of a Yig expansion? It turned out to be the first summer league scenario, but still... good times.

Mythos are famous for having books-not-to-be-read or revealed to mortal men. The FAQ book is one of those.

::laughter:: when I read the ponies thing, I was shocked because you weren't the one who mentioned it. Anyway, during vacation I collected tons of ponies. Gonna mail them to you later.

Yes, and believe me, I'm very grateful for all the efforts taken, but frankly FFG should have put the material on-line, not relied on their fan-base to do so.

Ponies for all! Huzzah!
