Experience GM, Newb WHFRPG GM

By GalaxyUC, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hey Guys,

I've been GM'ing for blah blah years, you know where I'm going with this. I've picked up WHFRPG, for a second time. Yes, I owned it before and it scared me a little. I also didn't think I could get my "Super-Friends" back together to game anymore. Well, I was wrong about that last part. So, I got WH once again and need to know something from you all...Can I run a WHRPG with 5 Players?? I know the Core Set only supports 3 Players. If I pick up the Adventurers Toolkit and an extra Set of Dice Pack, do you think I would be covered? What do I need to get to make this happen?

The Second part of my thread of questions is...Do you think WHFRPG can even support 5 players effectively, or do many of you think it was effectively designed with only 3 maaaybe 4 players in mind to function properly?? I'm on the fence between this game and n old Classic: Dragonlance 5th Age Dramatic Adventure Game, which uses the SAGA System, a diceless system card-only based mechanic. Having read both sets of rules, SAGA is the faster system, but WH is modern and has a lot of bells and whistles. Also, playing a "dead" game vs. a supported game makes a difference as well. But, I know SAGA can handle up to 6 players with no problem, as we've done it. Can WH bring the bacon??

Thanks for reading!!

YES you can play with 5 or more! :-) and I think you're heading in the correct direction with Core, Adventures Tool kit and extra dice.

From a GM's perspective it's very easy to increase or decrease encounter difficultly based of player numbers because senarios use Henchmen. Page 42 ToA. The Henchmen group size is based on the number of players. Lets say you have 6 players and they are attached by a Gor and 3 ungor henchmen groups, each henchmen group listed in an encounter will have 6 ungors in it based on the number of players. Hope that helps

WFRP does fine with 5 players, but you may want to pick up some extra dice for convenience.

You'll also wnt everyone to print out a basic actions sheet so you dont have to share basic cards:

I regularly run a group with 5, and it works fine just like any other RPG.

The only thing to deal with, really, are the limited number of cards. I would also recommend getting the GM pack. The extra basic action cards and dice are worth it, as well as additional standups for common enemies. With that plus Core Set + Toolkit + extra dice pack will give you plenty enough for 5 players. You can run players with just the Core Set, though. Your players will just need to share some of the cards, like the basic actions, and pass the dice around a bit more. That's really the only 'impediment'.

I'd also recommend you, and possibly one or two players, pick up the Players Guide. It is a convenient way for players to have their own ability to read over rules, careers, and actions.

I'll chime in, too. I've played with five as well and it works just fine. Do pick up the extra dice, and go slowly through the first couple of sessions so that everyone knows how to use all the various mechanics; someone who's confused can get lost in the shuffle when you have five players. If combat drags, remind them to think about their turn while others are taking theirs. Scaling up in this game is, as everyone else has said, quite easy.

Currently running 2 sessions a week with different groups....one group with 4 players and one group with 6 players. 4 player group running absolutely fine. 6 player group just easily rolled over a load of cultists and a Demon so I may need to work on scaling things a little. Not having any issues with lack of components (we have 1 set of all the supplements, and an additional copy of the main set). Keeping everyone engaged with 6 players in a combat was a little tricky - but I'd say easier than a lot of systems. I'm a bit of a newby GM at WFRP but I'm finding it really easy to run - the dice certainly aid the creative juices & I can say have lead to roleplaying situations that would have been hard to achieve with any other system. Enjoy running it!
