Greyjoy deck archetypes?

By Hamster Friend, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

So when hunting around for possible decks that I might try building after I noticed a couple that I didn't quite see comprehensive decklists for. One is "choke" (which I take to be AGoT LCG-speak for that other card games refer to as a "control"), the other is some sort of discarding deck that from what I gather seems to be interchangeably referred to as a "raid" or "pillage" deck.

My question is, what's the basic build for such decks? I can only guess that the Choke deck practically requires stuff liked Pulled Under and Fishing Net but I don't know what else. I see a lot of cards that look like they support that Pillage theme but I'm wondering, how competitive is that particular decktype?

And am I right to assume that both such decks are more subthemes or related to what are advertised as the faction's main strengths, namely unopposed attacks and character saves?

Not quite.

The "choke" deck archetype aims at reducing the opponent's options by denying him income. It relies on cards like White Raven, Ice Fisherman, Burned and Pillaged, River Blockade and Cragorn. It is necessarily a Winter deck, so it's often referred to as "Winter Choke" and usually contains other cards that are keyed to Winter, most importantly the Wintertime Marauders.

The deck type that is based on discarding cards from an opponents deck is most commonly called the "Mill" deck. Often it's Raider cards that are connected to the deck discard mechanic, so this type is also referred to as "Raider" or "Raider Mill" deck.

A third deck type that GJ has is the so called "unopposed" deck. It collects effects that facilitate winning unopposed challenges and get extra benefits for doing so. It usually contains characters with the Intimidate keyword, effects that are related to Intimidate and the Ironborn trait, and the plot Rise of the Kraken.

Note that the best GJ decks often use elements from all three archetypes. A classical build would be one that is based on Winter/Choke, but includes the best of the unopposed effects and makes good use of the many excellent Warship locations GJ has.

Pure Mill decks have often beed deemed subpar in the past, but that might change when the "Here to Serve" chapter pack comes out. Nevertheless, many GJ decks contain at least some deck discard effects.

HTH.

Hmm. What kind of deck is the one in this Winter-themed decklist? As a guide I've tried looking around at some winning decks and this one's appealing to me the most.

Is there any thread around here that explains the terminology for newbies? I'm looking for something like this Lexicon thread we put up on L5R's Spider Clan forums a long while back.

Not that I'm aware of. Don't worry, you'll pick it up as you go along.
