New Campaign Idea

By theronin, in Rogue Trader

I first became intrigued with the RT game when I read a few posts about it on another message board. I purchased the game at Gen Con 2010 without having played it at all but I was determined to run a campaign someday for my group. I knew nothing of the 40K universe so I decided to read some novels. I started with the Eisenhorn books and I liked them alot. I followed that up with the Ravenor series but I never got past the first book for some reason. I really like the premise of the other settings too. I say premise because I don't own the books though I plan to buy them in the future. I have been toying around with an idea for a campaign and I wanted to get some opinions about my thoughts.

I want to run a RT campaign with some elements of DH and DW included. My plan would be to have the players use the RT characters until level 4-5. Then I'd have them involved somehow with a DH team on a joint mission. My thoughts initially would be for the RT team's success to be dependent upon the DH team's success. I'd then have pregenerated DH PCs for the players to choose from and they'd have to complete the DH mission themselves. Once they did that they'd also need to complete the RT mission to be successful. I'd then do a few more levels of RT then do the same thing with some DW characters. Perhaps the DW characters need to perform a precision strike mission against a dangerous leader of the enemy forces before the RT crew can bring in the calvary.

I haven't really thought about any specifics yet as far as adventures are concerned. I own the core RT rulebook, the GM's screen, Lure of the Expanse, Edge of the Abyss, and all of the material on the FFG website. I plan to pick up Battlefleet Koronus too and I could pick up some of the adventures for RT if needed. My initial thoughts were to pick up the core books for DH and DW plus an adventure or two for each setting to mine for ideas. Ideally I'd like to find some adventures I could plug in without a ton of adjustments but I am open to any ideas really. I want to give the players the chance to feel the grand scope of the RT game, the dark investigation aspect of DH, and the kick ass feeling of playing a bad ass space marine of DW. Once I had them run each set of PCs for DH and DW once I'd only use them again as I thought the players were interested in playing them.

Most of my experience in running games in the past are with 2e/3e/3.5/d20 Modern. My campaigns usually last about 18 months or so but this one could last longer as long as we are having fun. I know I won't be running this for at least 4-6 months, maybe even a year or more. I want to have some ship combat because it sounds so cool. I don't have any ship minis but I do have a projector I use for running games. I am sure I could find some digital images of spaceships to use with d20 Pro and it would work out great. I have been spending most of my time reading the fluffier parts of the RT core rulebook to get the feel for the game. I've also spent a decent amount of time on this site too :)

I'd be interested in hearing what people think about the idea. I'd also like to hear suggestions for DH / DW adventures and how they can be tied in with a RT game.

Thanks for the input!

I like the idea and RT certainly would allow for what you are talking about doing.

However, with DH there is a very distinct powerlevel difference. RT characters by there very nature are about 4500 xp higher than starting DH characters so you can't do a Rank for Rank translation when you create the DH PCs. Although, you can explain why the RT characters are off doing something else why the DH characters have to be the ones to fix the problem.

Sounds like a fun campaign idea though.

My initial plan was to have the DH characters at approximately the same power level of the RT characters. I figured this meant making higher level DH characters which is why I planned to use DH first and DW second. I do have one female player and I just found out there are no female space marines. My plan to handle that was to make her a high level inquisitor character and put her in charge of the mission the space marines have to handle.

I didn't mention this specifically in my original post but I planned for each player to have 3 different PCs to play. I would have them make their own RT characters but I planned to make NPCs for them to use with DH and DW. If it turned out they liked the idea of playing all 3 systems then I may have them make their own individual DH and DW characters. I'd treat the NPCs like I would for a one shot, giving them personality quirks and such to make them fun to play. The success of the DH or DW mission will determine how things are for the RT characters as they proceed with their mission.

I still have alot to work out but I have planty of time to think about it.

Keep the thoughts coming!
