Questions about bound by blood

By Bonus Card, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Challenges: Return 1 character to your hand (cannot be saved) to put another character with the same cost (and a different title) into play from your hand.

Can I take any character that I own and is in play back into my hand? Meaning controlled by others but owned by me. How about a shadows character?

Also, in conjunction with knights of the storm can I change the first player mid challenge phase? if so, what would the outcome be?

No, you must return a character you control. When you see something with the structure "do X to do Y", the "do X" part is a cost that must be paid for the effect. You may only pay for costs with cards (and other resources) that you control (unless otherwise specified on the card).

I am not sure what you are asking about a Shadows character, but you may either return a Shadows character to hand or put one into play with this card. Just remember that the "s" in the cost of a Shadows card counts as two gold when determining a card's cost for an effect like this. Something like the Queen of Thorns with a cost of s1 could be exchanged with another card costing 3.

I gave you my answer to the last question in the other thread. Putting a character into play does not count as playing a character so the Knights of the Storm's ability would not be usable.

Keep in mind that if you take control of an opponent's character. you could pay the cost of this event with that character (because you control it). However, if you do, the card will go to its owner's hand when it leaves play because cards always revert to their owner when they leave play. So while it is possible, it isn't a particularly good play.

Actually I was speaking of a character of mine controlled by the opponent. Therefore both of those control questions have now been answered. However, the shadows bit kind of threw me. So the s in the cost area actually equals two, therefore is the cost was s3 i could actually switch places with a cost 5 card. I would think that the card would have to be out of shadows before the switch, but could the shadows card played be played into shadows? Would I have to reveal it first as proof?

The Shadows area is an out-of-play area. The card text for Bound by Blood requires you to put the character in play, ergo you cannot put the new character into Shadows.

The Shadows area is an out-of-play area. The card text for Bound by Blood requires you to put the character in play, ergo you cannot put the new character into Shadows.

And a card in Shadows has no other characteristic than bring card in Shadows, so you cannot choose to return a card in Shadows to your hand, because it cannot be identified as a character.

Besides, cards in out-of-play areas cannot be affected by effects unless the effect specifically says so, so that's another reason why you couldn't return a card in Shadows to your hand using Bound By Blood.

Yes, sorry, I was referring to a Shadows character that had already been brought into play from Shadows (or one that was still in your hand). As stated above, a card in Shadows does not count as a character and can not be returned by Bound by Blood.

By the way, Bonus Card, I should have mentioned this in one of my earlier replies to your questions: if you have not done so already, definitely read through the FAQ. It goes into a lot more detail than the basic rule book and gives a lot of insight into how the rules work. You can get to it through the support page of the A Game of Thrones part of FFG's website. Alternatively, you could click the link in Saturnine's signature above.
