Forbidden Lore: The Black Library

By Nearyn, in Dark Heresy

What kind of knowledge do you think the PCs with this skill actually have? What does it cover?

As I've come to understand having a +20 in anything is DH's way of saying "you're as well read on this topic as is possible, or at least very close to it"

So what does that mean when your character has FL:BL? Do they know it exist, and that it is kept by eldar scholar-guardians, nested somewhere within the webway? Do you know WHERE in the webway? Do you simply know it exist? Do you know who get access, or who has access?

Or is the skill supposed to signify that you know what is actually inside? That you have been there? That you are among those that WOULD be allowed entrance?

According to lore, aside from its stewarts, only Eldar solitaires and Illuminati gain entrance... (with very few exceptions). Does this support that the illuminati idea has not been scrapped in the newest edition of the system? What about the star-child sect?

My problem here is that I have NO idea what exactly I have bought for my character XD

I have no clue whether this should mean that my character should consider this a sort of "Forbidden lore: Xenos- Expanded, secret eldar lore" or whether i should consider it "Forbidden lore: Damons, Heresy, Cults, chaos whatever" or both. Or whether I have an eldar Harlequinn chasing me for some overdue library books.

Thoughts, ideas etc. Very much appreciated.

Very funny, I can see it now.

Perhaps the FL:BL is more specific than the other FLs. Where FL: Deamons may let you know about deamons, how to hurt them etc, perhaps you could treat FL:BL as more specific in that you know which book contains which ritual to open which gate, and which of those books are in the BL. Or something like that?

In addition to knowing that the Black Library actually exists and that the Harlequins are it's guardians (something not known by even the average Inquisitor), I think you might know if a specific volume of forbidden lore is rumored to be contained therein. You might also know what human groups or individuals are actively seeking the Library. At +20, you might even know how to go about petitioning the Eldar for a visit- but be prepaired to burn some Fate if you make even the slightest mistake...

Let´s face it: the DH-game failed to provide us with even a hint of use for this skill.

This is unfortunately true for a small number of skill. While they have descriptions, one is really challenged to make up some use
of it in the game.

I hope the FFG will coupe with this by one day producing something like "A book of skills". Or even a booklet of skill (60 pages).

I think this skill was an Easter Egg. Something the designers put in for fun, not really meant to be used.

The description of the skill is a tongue-in-cheek descriptions of some of those people at Black Industries involved with the creation of the first version of the Core book.

Some sort of 'Meta' knowledge skill that allows you to use your Player Knowledge of the contents of the 40k Novels in a tongue in cheek in-game way perhaps. No good if you haven't read any of them like me though.
