Seeking advice for painting rust, dirt, battle damage, etc. on walkers.

By felkor, in Dust Tactics

So I'm almost done painting my allied troops and looking at painting up my walkers. I'm planning on leaving the main colour the same as the primer, but adding various kinds of rust, dirt, battle damage, etc. and then painting on the "dip".

Anyway, I was wondering if there are any good tutorials on doing these kind of weathering effects. What have people done that look good on the walkers? Painting is all new to me and I'm looking for some good tutorials for weathering my walkers.

Any help would be greatly apprecieated!

Thanks! I'll check those out.

you could find a copy of ''painting citadel tanks'', and ''imperial armour masterclass'' both are great resources. youtube also has some decent tutorials.

Thanks. I'll check out those books. I've found a few youtube tutorials, and I found that MIG Productions has several special weathering effects that come highly recommended, so I've ordered those. Sounds like as with just about anything else with painting miniatures, there's a hundred different ways to do it all.

Might I recommend AK Interactive? They are endorsed by Mig Jiminez, the guy who started Mig Productions. I bought a bottle of their Streaking Grime and Rust Grime, and it looks like really good stuff, though I haven't tried it yet. Plus, I forgot to get a bottle of White Spirit (a thinner that is MUCH less toxic than turpentine) in my shopping cart before I place my order, and when I contacted the company about it, I got a free bottle of White Spirit AND Dark Streaking Grime. Pretty awesome.

How to Build Dioramas by Shepard Pain

It is the book that got me looking at other techniques like weathering and Shading.

Check out U-Tube for W.W.2 vehicles and Wierd War 2 Walkers, also Hitlers secret Weapons, Many repairs done in field went straight to war with Red Lead or Grey primer panels. The weather radically changes U.S,A. olive drab and the inside of jeeps ,1/2 tracks etc could be several shades darker than outer exposed areas. Look to real life 18 wheelers for inspiration and have a good time painting.
