help a noob to understand better

By kamacausey, in CoC Rules Discussion

hi guys. i just started playing coc. i need some rules clarifications please. first off is there a 'stack" or 'chain' in this game similar to whats in magic and wow? like if you play a card can i play something in response or does there have to be a certain time to play certain cards? i was reading through the rule book but i dont totally understand how everything works. for example, last night me and a buddy of mine were playing and he played deep one rising to kill a character i had in play. can i in response before my character dies play a small price to pay on that character or is there a certain time that it has to be played? i guess im just unsure of how all the timing works in this game still. also, can you have multiple of the same items and locations in play at the same time or is there a limit?

thanks,

Hey kama,

There is no 'stack' in CoC. Each player takes turns taking actions. At the beginning of each action window the active player can play an action first. If his action is to Deep One Assault then that will open up a window so players can use disrupts. Otherwise the action resolves and opens a window for players to respond with respsonses and/or forced responses. After that is all over, then the non-active player may use an action.

For more of a chart.

1. An Action is played.
2. Disrupts may be played.
3. Action resolves.
4. Forced Response and Response effect can be played.
5. The other player may use and Action .

Now, obviously this is a rather simplized version of what all can actually happen as effects and be dirupted, other responses can kick in strange ways before another player can take an action. But for the most part this is how it works.

So for you're specific example. You cannot use A Small Price to Pay "in response" to your opponent playing Deep One Assault.

thanks for responding so fast. say i have another character in play when he deep one assaults me and kills one of my characters, when its my turn to take an action, even though its his turn i get a chance to take an action and play a small price to pay right?

also i can never choose one of my willpower characters to go insane for the puposes of a small price to pay can i?

Yes and yes. Actions alternate with the active player taking the first action, then the passive player taking action (if desired) and then the active player, etc.

If a character has Willpower or Terrify icons it cannot be made insane (unless there is something in play that says otherwise).

im confused...so for the purposes of a small price to pay i can make one of my willpower guys go insane? that doesnt seem right...

You cannot.

When I said "yes", I meant, "Yes, you are correct, you can never choose one of your characters..."
