Underhanded Assassin and Intimidate

By tldpaladin, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hello community.

I have two questions, regarding "underhanded assassin" and "intimidate"

i) The underhanded assassin attacks, and defenders are declared as eligible (i.e, Ser Emmon Cuy: str 2).

Now, since we have actually moved into the challenge itself: If the player controlling Ser Emmon plays something boosting his str, (heart of the stag, for example), is Ser Emmon affected by the "participating characters do not count their str" ability? Does he get a strength of 4, or his strength, since it has gone over underhanded assassin's 2, is considered "not to be counted"?

ii) Intimidate

A character with "Intimidate" is attacking. Defenders are declared as eligible. We're going into the challenge itself. If the first character's (the one with intimidate) strength is raised, does the intimidate keyword "kick out" of the challenge the defenders with strength now lower than the "intimidating" character's boosted strength? Or does the challenge continue normally, since defenders have been declared and the "intimidate/defence" thingy has already been resolved?

Thank you in advance

There is only one moment during the challenge where Intimidate or the Underhanded Assassin's ability matter, and that is when comparing the strength of attacking and defending characters during the challenge resolution. So if a participating character's strength changes before the resolution of the challenge, Intimidate /Underhanded Assassin will affect it accordingly when you compare the strength of your characters.

The thing to realize with these "characters do not count their STR" effects is that they have absolutely no effect on who can or cannot be declared as an attacker/defender in the challenge. And they do not "kick out" anyone. They do not stop a character from participating in a challenge in any way. In fact, you might WANT to declare participating characters who will ultimately not be able to count their STR because of their abilities, or Stealth, Renown, Deadly, etc.

As Saturnine says, the only time Intimidate or other "do not count their STR" effects matter is when you actually get to the point of counting the STR of participating characters to see who wins the challenge. Nothing else is affected.

Thank you very much :)

p.s: (****. I hoped it would have been the other way :P )

Hi,

I have question about assasin too, it says on him participating that include my own characters is that correct? I can attack with how many characters I want, but If I they have to count their strength in challenge result, they must by lower or equal to assassin ? Thanks

If a card does not specify "opponent's participating characters" or "defending characters" or anything like that, than "participating characters" reffers to every character in the challenge, regardless of who controls it, or who's side it is on.

With that in mind, that also means Intimidate also works against your own characters much the same way.
