Plans for 4th ed?

By Alexca1, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

They just redid Descent, so I have to ask: Are there plans to revise TI? I've played TI 3rd ed. and want to get my own copy, but I'll wait if they're releasing 4th ed.

Anyone out there know anything, if there's even a need for a 4th ed yet?

I don't know anything about it, but I doubt that will happen for a while given that they just released another expansion.

I concur. TI3 is getting pretty old these days, but if they were planning to make a 4th ed in the foreseeable future, I would have expected them to hold onto the Shards content and use it as "improvements" in the new base game. That fact that they put Shards out as an expansion to TI3 means (at least IMHO) that FFG is still invested in this edition. At least for a few more years.

Besides which, I don't think TI3 has any really grievous flaws that would necessitate a new edition. Generally speaking, FFG only makes a new edition of something when they have significant changes in mind.

Descent, as a first edition game, made a few mechanical blunders even in the base game (basic campaign, anyone?) and has only grown more bloated and awkward as the expansion rules piled on top of one another. Don't get me wrong, I do love Descent first edition, but that game was sorely in need of revision. I expect D2e will deliver that change and provide a neater, slimmer system to continue building on in future years.

I'm not saying that a fourth edition of Twilight Imperium will never happen - it is their flagship game after all. I just don't think it will happening soon.

Probably not after the recent release of a new expansion. I also do not want to see a new edition. I like what has been done with this one and probably would not change editions if it changed to much. Like the massive change from TI2 to TI3 saw some people not change over I would stick with what I have.

I would love to see a big box that contained all the expansions sold thought as it might get more people into the game anew.

I doubt TI needs a 4th edition, the rules don't step all over each other that much, everything works quite well.

And if anything I found the game to run faster with all the expansions and variants stuffed into it (Well 80% of them.)

While Descent (as mentioned) had this incredible amount of rules that looked sideways at each other and caused conflict at the drop of a card. COnsidering descent was 7 box heavy of cross rules, it needed a new edition.

ANd with the upcoming release of Rex, I think TI is still going to be going strong for a few more years.

(Yes I know Rex is only Thematically related to TI and has nothing to do with it's mechanics or pieces. Still it's nice to see some TI related stuff. Plus Dune is a great game to re-release even if it is getting a new coat of paint.)
