Pleasantly surprised by dust tactics

By fade_74, in Dust Tactics General Discussion

Hey guys and gals,

I saw some dust minis on the net a few months ago and really liked them. So, after a long debate with myself I decided to say "what the heck, it's only money, right" and ordered up the basic set. I called all my friends, and they seemed pretty hesitant about getting into "another game". So, a couple days later, I got the set in the mail. I opened it up, drug out all the minis onto the floor, like a little kid lol. The wife wanted to know if I was going to start making shooting noises. I really love these minis. Then, I opened the rule book and read it. The rules are about as good as the minis! So I started surfing the net and found the revised rules and points costs. I liked that too. So, I called up a couple buddies and they came to the house to try it out. My buddy Eric is pretty open about games, and he seemed to really like it. My buddy DTJB needed a bit more convincing though. He is the type of guy that has to be convinced about any new game and has to usually be dragged kicking and screaming. He watched one game, played one game, and fell into it quite easily. He is actually going to blow the dust (no pun intended) off some of his cash and ^gasp buy some models lol. I have been hard at work painting up squads for a few days now (while waiting for seelow, cylone, and a ton of new minis to arrive by mail). The models paint up nicely and look very detailed with just a bit of work. So, thanks to the folks at FFG for making such a cool game! I hope you continue producing great products!

Good stuff!

I've also found people get into the game and are impressed by it very quickly, and even moreso as you paint some figures and "pimp up" the game a bit. I also highly recommend adding 3-D terrain. There are some papercraft bunker walls available on BoardGameGeek that are easy to put together and make the game look 10x better.

Oh yes. I can't imagine playing this game with the 2D terrain. The paper walls not only make it looks infinitely better, but also much more realistic and the LOS issues easier to gage at a glance.

I concur with you guys. 3d terrain will be something I get to work on soon. I think I am going to some giant monolithic stone things with maybe a cthulhu theme. The antarctic setting always reminds me of H.P. Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness". Maybe some large statues too. I also thought about making some tents and the like for single square terrain. You could use them in some scenarios for the defender and deploy near them like your troops are waking up. I also thought about catwalk looking structures with support pylons as the squares. Those would be fun to make up some rules for.

Welcome and glad you like the game.

I think most people would be pleasantly surprised so long as they are not expecting a full on war simulation. Dust Tactics is good for a fast paced strategic war game that is accessable to all players as you do not need vast amounts of models or spend loads of money to play it. In a way I think they should have kept the Blue Thunder box set going as it was a great entry into the game & great value for money.

Wait a sec, FFG is discontinuing the original DT core box set?

Yup! Replaced with new revised core set. Comes out in a week or so.

The problem with that review is that it's from the standpoint of someone getting into the game via the Revised Core Set. It's really reviewing Dust Tactics, and not looking at it as a new expansion to an existing game, which is how most of us around here see it.

FFG never made the original Core Set. That is why all the boxes have stickers on them with the FFG logo and there is no mention of FFG in the rulebook. FFG was approached at the last minute to pick up the line after it had already been produced by AEG due to support issues.

I think it's good that they release the revised core set. Granted, the original is a lot more value, but value also means it's more expensive. A lot of my boardgaming friends are cheap and for a game to get off to a good start, it needs a good player base.

Besides, it's a good excuse to get the additional units for your collection. ;)

Without question the "old" Core Set was an exceptional value .... but all the models except for the heroes are available on their own now. The new Core Set has to be a bridge between Tactics and Warfare when the new game is released.

Hmm, two heroes, three squads each, a pair of walkers, a little bit cheaper than the original core set...Looks like at least as good a value to me. Yeah, you get posters instead of the tiles, but I've got a bunch of tiles now.

That's why it is great value as an expansion , but not so hot as a basic set .

Sorry to dispute your position but it is a really good "core" set for the game ... and as an expansion on existing models. The revised core set will also be a great place to start for the miniature gamer when the Dust Warfare book is released.

Im with loophole here. While I like the looks of the revised core, it seems less BASIC then the original set. The Axis get one "normal" squad (not that the Sturmpioneres are all that normal) and two TANK INFANTRY squads. I prefer the three "normal" set up.

Its a shame the original set is out of print.

I've found some of the original core sets on eBay and other game websites ... and at very good prices too. Even Amazon has some available.
